Carey Mulligan's reaction to Driver in the elevator scene...

She seemed so blank-faced. I can understand if that's a look of shock and that she finally sees Driver for the person he really is; but to me, it felt as if there was no expression at all. This is the only real gripe I had with this movie. Besides that, it's a fantastic gem.

It would have been perfect if she said "damn n1gg@!"

First hand accounts from people who have been subjected to extreme violence vary wildly. Sometimes people freak out completely, other times they have a mental meltdown but every now and then people sorta "glaze over" and it seems like the weight of the situation doesn't sink in immediately.

This. I thought her reaction was realistic.

I agree she underplayed it but that is her acting style.

That was everyone's reaction to everything throughout the entire movie! Gosling acted like he'd been hypnotized! It reminded me of some of those Hitchcock movies where he would have people just walk blank-faced through every scene and let the audience fill in the characters' emotions themselves. I don't think it really works as a style of directing actors, but it certainly has a history behind it.

For a dollar, name three white people. . .

Yeah I always thought so too. I think Refn must have instructed her to not express too much, cos he wanted the focus more on Driver in that scene, and not so much Irene. At least WHILE he was doing the stomping. Even afterwards I don't think she looked genuinely shocked.
