Should have watched the movie before I read the manga

I would have perhaps enjoyed it more. I'm not sure casting an adult female as Dororo was the best decision. Part of what made Dororo so compelling was that she (spoiler alert for those who never read the manga) was a kid forced to survive as an orphan in a harsh world. She passed herself off as a male (and fooled everyone until a bathing scene later in the comic) because she had to convince herself and others that she was tough enough to make it on her own. Also, before you pervs run out to buy the manga (or before you prudes start whining about it,) nothing is shown in the bathing scene. The evidence of Dororo's gender is only seen by the characters, not the reader. Making her an obvious adult female thief instead of an androgynous child with lots of moxie made her just a dull stock character in the movie.

I wasn't too fond of the movie because of this. They made the character of Dororo very dull and annoying. Not that she wasn't annoying in the manga. But at least she was interesting.

I'm sure it's a fine movie if you've never read the manga though. The special effects were okay. The acting's adequate. They did fine with Hyakkimaru. And the demons were fine.

If you can get your hands on the manga, I say skip the movie and read the manga.
