American Hoax (SPOILERS)

Is it just me, or does more and more evidence seem to point to all the contestants on "The Ultimate, Ultimate Challenge" being plants and the show a total fake? Now, I have not ruled out the possibility that pseudonyms were used, but seriously, there is no information about Kristen Kerr anywhere, save for information about the already established actress. I have a feeling my attempts to search for litigation against someone named Patrick Camp would leave me with the same results. When are people going to learn that something on such a large scale is impossible to stage in this day and age without being found out incredibly quickly? I thought that American Cannibal was a pretty good movie that gave any viewer in America something to think about, but now it seems that the only thing there is to think about is whether or not the whole thing was a hoax.

As I said in another post-

have you heard about ANY of the fatties who were injured on "Biggest Loser" suing?
What? you NEVER heard about any fatties getting hurt?
IT'S HAPPENED EVERY SEASON.
One season, they shut down production for WEEKS.
Yet, no one has heard anything about it.

The ESPN show from a few years back -"I'll do anything" ?
So many Contestants were injured, they CANCELLED the show.
3 Contestants on one episode ended up hospitalized with bad burns to their feet.
But, NO ONE outside of the reality business has heard of that.

What about the Big Brother Food Poisoning?
NOTHING.

Don't be so sure you'd hear anything.
I work in reality TV from time to time, and I am ALWAYS amazed by what goes on that NO ONE knows about.

In fact, point me to ONE reality contestant suing a show or other contestants. (besides that girl from season 1 of survivor, whose case was summarily dismissed).
Just One.
No?
Didn't think so.

I've no clue if 'Cannibal" is real or not.

What i do know is, it seems real to me, having worked in this kind of situation.
And, knowing how many injuries and accidents that have happened on shows I've worked on-
it seems all the more plausible.

You're kind of proving everyone else's point: The incidents you mention aren't being kept very secret if you're posting about them.

reply

I almost get the feeling that you've been dispatched by someone attached to this movie, in an attempt to explain away some of the accusations related to "the accident".

How do any of us even know that these incidents you refer to are even real? Yes, I'm certain that accidents happen on reality shows, but something of the magnitude of what Patrick supposedly perpetrated on Kristin? Give me a break. That's not an accident, that's assualt or attempted murder or whatever. That would not be covered up so easily. For chrissake, in the technology-driven world we live in, everyone of us knows everytime Miss Spears leaves her house without the benefit of underwear.

You cite all the reality television shows that supposedly cover up accidents and assualts. Well, what about The Real World, Survivor, Amazing Race, I Love New York, and Celebrity Fit Club, to name a few? All of these programs have shown accidents and assaults taking place during filming. In fact, they practically thrive on such occurances. If the producers of "American Cannibal" were as licentious as the mockumentary leads you to believe, they would be advertising this show with the pitch that promises "Reality like you've never seen it before!!!", no doubt.

p.s. It's really not nice that you refer to the contestants on The Biggest Loser as "fatties". It just really shows your ignorance.

The leaves are changing colors...

First things first-
not involved with the movie at all, just apparently was one of the believers of what another poster calls a well done, but manipulative film.
A good description.
What can I say? I guess i was wrong.
Yes, after a few more viewings and discussing it with a few friends, i believe it's not entirely real.
A lot of it must be, just not all of it. I think.
(The "Virgin Territory" show is real, so some of it must be, right?)
To be honest, I'm not sure how much is real at all now.
So, even though I liked it, I guess i was fooled.

However, as to my post and your response-
Every reality show accident i mentioned happened - and I only know because I worked on these shows WHEN they happened.
This is how I know they are real, and you do not. But with some digging, even you can find some mention of injuries on personal blogs of former contestants...

And FYI- EVERYONE who works on Biggest Loser calls them Fatties, INCLUDING the trainers and the contestants themselves - if you haven't noticed,
THEY ARE HUGE FAT PEOPLE who are trying to lose weight.
That's the entire premise of the show.

And your "tech driven world" comment shows your ignorance of how these shows work.

Ms. Spears is followed by cameras due to her making $$ off them getting great shots of her doing crazy things. Why do you think she changes outfits every 5 minutes?
Why do they ALWAYS know where she is going? Why is she in EVERY magazine?
Because, silly - she's getting a cut of the sale of the shots, so she clues them all in.
Same with Lazy Lohan- why do you think she carries products in many of her "candid" shots?
It's because suckers think that is how it "really" is and Boom! -
Somehow sales of a Nicotine Gum spike all over.
Magazines sell, money changes hands, Britney shows up in a pink wig, more pix get taken, cycle repeats itself.

A reality show is a controlled set. Very Controlled. Everyone who sets foot in our Production Office must sign a Confidentiality Agreement in case they see or hear something.
NO cellphones are even allowed on set anymore - due to confidentiality clauses and such, they can't risk something getting out.
Every reality show that exploits an accident (ie: the guy falling in the fire on Survivor) is a show that is financed for a full run and has a network order they must fulfill. If an accident is such that it fits the "story' they are crafting, and it is convenient to the show (on Survivor, it's a good 3 minutes of tv- contestants panic, medics come in, injured party is flown out, boy is this game tough, blah blah, person shows up at final show healthy 4 months later), they cut it and use it. Insurance premiums are crazy high as a result of these accidents.
if it's not good for the storyline or more importantly, the "image" of the show, it doesn't ever get mentioned to anyone and it hits the cutting room floor.
That's EXACTLY why The Biggest Loser injuries never see the light of day - it would change the public's perception about this "feel good" show.

So, HYPOTHETICALLY
(If 'American Cannibal" were 100% real), the Documentary crew probably would have signed C/A's and likely would not be allowed to air certain footage (Like the challenges) or allegations. Again, if it were all real. (For Example: the Documentary "Lost in La Mancha" which captures the collapse of the Terry Gilliam Film "Don Quixote" was only allowed to use some of their footage after Johnny Depp, Terry Gilliam and the Production Company signed off and agreed to its' use).

However, since they were only supposedly shooting a Pilot episode in American Cannibal, there would be NO WAY to exploit the injury (if she really was) as it apparently stopped filming and the agent says they didn't have enough footage for the 22 minutes required. So, her getting hurt actually killed the show's chances, and like "La Mancha" the crew was there to capture it all, but could only show certain things legally.
If it's real, of course.

Who knows?
Either way, I enjoyed it.
I think it accurately reflects how the reality business works at every level.
Which is probably why it pulled me in- I believed it all.

Sorry for the long post.

Okay, so you bring up some legitimate points, but I still have a hard time fathoming that any reality show, if responsible in some way for the death, murder, rape, serious assault, etc., of a contestant, would be able to completely cover it up. By "responsible" I mean gross negligence. It stands to reason that if you are a contestant on The Biggest Loser you run the risk of being hospitalized with symptoms or side effects related to weight loss. If you are a contestant on The Biggest Loser and you are attacked with a sharp object by another contestant, and this leads to you hospitalization, then I refuse to believe that this information would not be discovered by the press and leaked to the public.

Yes, I know that the cast and crew of reality shows sign confidentiality agreements, but this does not excuse them from reporting crimes. Most of the examples that you cite are accidents that occur on set due to the nature of the contest that the participants are partaking in. Even then, people have loose lips. I disctinctly remember reading that two of the participants in Kid Nation were rushed to the hospital for accidentally imbibing bleach from a soda bottle during the filming of the show. The incident was never aired during the series, which means that somebody had to break their confidentiality agreement, and leak the news of the incident to media.

On the contrary, I don't agree that my comment about a "tech-driven" world demostrates my ignorance for the reality medium. If people can find ways to sneak bombs into airports, I'm cetain that they can also find ways to sneak cell phones onto the set of a reality T.V. program. Probably doesn't happen too often, but it must happen sometimes. Furthermore, my tech comment was not exclusive to the presence of cell phones. I meant to suggest that, with the proliferation of communication tools like the Internet, email, cell phones, etc., it would be pretty difficult for the media and public not to discover an incident on the level of what supposedly happened on the set of American Cannibal. I would imagine that, if you witnessed such an incident and failed to report it, you would be an accessory to a very serious crime. Any confidentiality agreement that requires you to keep mum about a crime of this nature is, in of itself, criminal.

In rebuttal to your explanation of your use of the word "fatties" to describe the contestants of The Biggest Loser, I still think it's crass that such a derogatory remark is so easily thrown about, whether on the show or off. Admittedly, I have never watched the show, so I was unaware of the fact that the terminology is used so freely. For that, I apologize to you. In my opinon, it just demonstrates how debase our society has become. Why not refer to the people on Celebrity Rehab and Intervention collectively as "crack heads" rather than "addicts"? Let's take it one step further , and we can begin calling the contestants on America's Next Top Model "bulemia cases". It's just plain demeaning to refer to people with disparaging nicknames. It's just another way of exploiting people's weakness and insecurities all the while making it appear as though they are being helped. People who sign up for shows of that nature are obviously having self-esteem/mental/emotional issues, or they wouldn't be eating and drinking themselves to death. How sad that's it's acceptable to belittle them for sickenesses.

It would be hard suing these show since they have them sign liability waivers.

Something new i noticed, on Kevin Blatt's Myspace blog, he refers to the movie as a film he stars in and hypes it. In direct contrast to this, ACME films said Blatt tried to sue them and keep the movie from being released. pretty strange...

You have to keep in mind as far as the lawsuit was concerned- I am a PR guy-that's my profession....do you think I'd really have the nuts to sue Robert Deniro and Jane Rosenthal?

Don't answer that...

I also find it almost impossible to believe this is truly a 'documentary' when the filmmakers can not find out what happened to the injured woman: they know her name, they know where she lives, they talk to her family, yet they can't find out what happened to her?!?! That just does not in any way seem believable.

reply

SPOILER. It was all scripted folks. That was the premise of the movie. That you simply cannot believe EVERYTHING you see or hear...

It was a sad attempt to jumpstart a few struggling writers by making light of what they saw in the industry.

If you take it for what it is it is actually a decent flick.

i'll add my 2 cents this goes towards the reality television series "so you wanna be a super hero"

i've actually met cast members of the 2 seasons and spent a good deal of time talking to those people. and as i'm in the costumning realm.

becouse the serious costumning community is fairly new and growing everyday a good deal of us already have the needed info as soon as a prospective cast member says i'll think about it and starts makeing calls to their friends going just say no they will call just dont know when.... its literally a race against time when the casting call goes out for that show... sure the guy who has nothing to lose and just wants to be on the show will say yes but marvel also wants the guys who who has everything to lose on that show too... cause they want the to see the hardcore creation and attitudes that bring life to the characters created

i know all about the contracts that marvel studios and scifi have the contestents agree too as well. and let me tell you its absolutely insane!!!!!!!! i have 5 friends who were called cause they are known in the costumning and comics realm to take one of their own personal creations on the show.. and then be told by the way you lose EVERYTHING related to that character say goodbye to it that being becomes our property....

i've also done film work as well and NDA's and C/A's are rampent wild fire on those programs / films and they have no problem what so ever sueing you for breaking any of em..

if anybody in the united states think nothing bad ever happens on reality shows that person would be extremely wrong..

the european and asian market... frankly don't give a *beep* what you see.... they will take a gun and shoot someone on camera if the shooter and victim will agree to it and show it on TV... hell big brother europe has the cast members naked and playing hide the sausage on camera!!! where the hell is that action on big brother US as soon as a girl goes into the bathroom and reaches for her shirt to take off the edit goes to someone else...

celebrity fitness had some really insane times that people found out about later via someone who knows someone who told them to later be confirmed by a real crew member who is off that show.

biggest loser oh i've seen my fair share of weight loss health hazards and for those people to lose that much that fast without surgery... HA! i won't watch cause its a watered down verson of what actually went down i can only imagine the insurence for that show and the size of the contestents contracts that they have to sign good freaking lord!!! cause i have to believe that production company has every orfice covered to the point you couldn't take a crap without the legal team breaking a sweat over if it was safe or not...

plus i have to say about this movie it really didn't help that they flew to the carribean during possibly the worst hurricane season on record... well no *beep* the oceans choppy shirlock your shooting while the storms are going through to the north!!!! (we see a storm right when they fly into the airport) yea now picture that every other week all day and then at a certain time everyday...

then there the incident with the one girl getting lacerated in the chest..
and another girl whos hypoglasyimic (meaning she MUST eat no matter what every 6 hours) her ass should of been on a truck headed back to civilization and on a plane going home the next day... all becouse she wanted to be famous and lied on her application in the health portion of it...

its no wonder production failed.. the creative team were at odds even in pre-production about what they were doing and all they could agree on is "damn i need this check".

and in production well it was a cluster *beep* since the first on site meeting

location shooting rules..

1) what can go wrong, will wrong!!!
2) health and safety is priority 1!!

So, they sent a SAG actor home because he was breaking rules being in a non-union show, but they were going to risk starving a hypoglycemic woman? There were some points in this movie where the acting was just attrociously obvious. I wrote it off to staging specific events to give the doc structure. But toward the end it becomes obvious that it's a hoax.

By the way, we had weeks of news here about reality contestants suing a reality show that had been shooting a pilot. Strangely enough, part of what came out was that the producer had produced porn in the past.
