Haddon Hall (Thornfield)

I just visited it last week. It was so lovely and it was such a beautiful day.

Then because it has been a few years since I watched this wonderful series I couldn't resist buying the DVD for a rewatch to see all the rooms and grounds I had just seen in detail.

btw I'd forgotten just how good this adaptation was. Toby Stephens and Ruth Wilson are excellent and they have wonderful chemistry together.

Hi Laura!  

Ha - this is good. During my recent England trip I actually went to Haddon Hall as well, totally oblivious of its use as a location in quite a number of films (my airbnb hostess had recommended it because of my visit to Chatsworth and the P&P'05 connection...that's me - totally inscrutable, motives not an open book to total strangers at all ... ).

I was reading Jane Eyre during my trip (I visited Haworth too), and when I got back home I figured that it might be nice to watch a good film adaptation of it (I had watched the Michael Fassbender version in 2011, but wasn't too taken with it).

So I got the 2006 version on DVD a couple of days ago (because of Toby Stephens), watched it last night - and was a tad surprised that it all looked a teensy bit familiar.  ...so I come here and find that you also look a teensy bit familiar! 

HH is indeed wonderful - better than Chatsworth as it doesn't have that 'smothered by marble/clobbered over the head with grandeur' feel to it but feels rather intimate. Though it has to be said that there were no busts to be had at HH at all, which is always a disadvantage. Loved the terraced garden with its view over the Wye river and the many lavender bushes which were in full bloom.

And yep, love the chemistry between Toby Stephens and Ruth Wilson in this version, which makes the 2011 version look utterly anaemic in comparison.

After all is said and done, a lot more will have been said than done.

I love Haworth. 

Yes, it was beautiful. I was such a lovely sunny day when we were there as well.

I agree. I have seen the 2011 version once but not a film I will be watching again. Not very memorable. Which is why when I wanted to watch a JE adaptation which used Haddon Hall, I went for the 2006 series. 

Sorry I didn't notice your post, Laura! How are you? 

Glad you enjoyed your day at Haddon Hall. I was there a few years ago and loved the place. I so agree with you, merej, about preferring it to Chatsworth. Chatsworth is beautiful, but it's rather overwhelming.

Hard to believe that this version of JE is ten years old!

I'm well Supergran. Hope you are too. 

I love Chatsworth as well. I've been twice now. The first time it was around Christmas and they had a Chronicles of Narnia theme going on. It was magical.

I know. How time flies. North and South will soon be twelve years old. .
