hes actually told in the movie that cats have nine lives, the kid just muddles it up later on - as kids do. he just heard they have several lives, and figures 7 is a good number.

That's simply a difference in culture. In the german speaking areas, the "magical number" is seven, not nine. It's not only the cats who have seven lives instead of nine. It's also called Wolke 7, not Cloud 9 (Wolke = Cloud).
shareI come from Austria ... and I must say, that in Austria cats have 9 lives. And I'm convinced that they have 9 lives in Germany // Bavaria too. I'm not sure, if you're right with your idea of the magical number 7.

shareI am from germany,too and I think it changes from region to region. As far as I know they have nine lives. But one year in a human's life equals seven years in a dog's life maybe some people mixed that up.
