Don't the people on this board know anything about movies?

Black Sheep is a direct descendant of 'An American Werewolf in London'. It has the same tongue-in-cheek attitude, high production values and reverence to its source material.

The many negative comments on this board are from idiots weaned on the porno-violence of Cube, Saw, Hostel and the rest. Get this: Black Sheep is not a horror film, it is a comedy!

The average age of IMDB users seems to be slightly less than their I.Q., which itself is barely into double figures; and their knowledge of film history does not seem to encompass anything they haven't been told to watch by their Media Studies/Film History teachers.

Time and time again I have bought, watched or downloaded total cr@p on the basis of IMDB evaluations, the latest being 'The Bourne Ultimatum' which is the most moronic and inept piece of film-making I have seen since Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge.

Why don't these people get a life, grow up, and spend some time watching REAL movies before spouting off half-assed opinions they can't justify.

Maybe IMDB should impose a rule that anybody who posts a comment should also append their list of ten-best-films-of-all-time. That way, you could look at a commenter's list and know whether to pay them any attention at all.

To return to the original point of this post: if you're looking for a funny, intelligent, off-centre (sorry Americans, 'off-center') pastiche of horror films, and if you liked 'An American Werewolf', 'Shaun of the Dead', 'Young Frankenstein' and 'Galaxy Quest', you'll like Black Sheep.

AMEN!!! Half the time, I read the boards for a laugh and it shocks me how many people take the films so seriously.

Black Sheep was hilarious and a little bit gross at times. I could see the similarities between many of the 'horror films' and it was amusing.

reply

The IMDB boards are filled with the comments of haters and deathbeats.
They don't know crap about movies, all they wanna do is mess with ya.
*beep* 'm all.

reply

Nothing to add to the initial poster.

The film was great, I think it is a lot better if you absolutely expect nothing and know nothing other than it is Shaun of the Dead-ish Dead Alive with mutated killer sheeps.

I juust saw it and it was so hilarious. Really, havent seen a better horror comedy, or horror movie for that matter in a long time, my last disappointment was Hatchet which I exoected to be like this one was.

reply

Seconded.

reply

Thirded.

reply

I enjoyed all the films you've listed (especially American Werewolf in London and shaun of the dead), but i still thought black sheep really didn't live up to its potential.

I think what it comes down to, what really separates Black Sheep from the films you listed, is that black sheep never really seems to take itself seriously. Well, that and the poor acting and messed up pacing.

reply

although I should add that when I saw this movie this idiot sitting near me in the theatre would squeal with delight at every stupid feng shui joke and the like so that may have ruined it for me.

reply

The Feng Shui line seems to have annoyed a lot of people.

OK, it wasn't delivered particularly well, but I have to admit it made me smile when I heard it.

If you didn't like the joke, ask yourself whether any director or writer ever makes a perfect movie with no bum lines or flat notes. If I had to play Devil's Advocate I'd say yes, there are one or two films like 'Singin' in the Rain' and 'Far from the Madding Crowd', where you wouldn't want to change a single word, but such films are few and very far between.

The odd flat joke or misjudgment can be forgiven if the rest of the movie works. Films like 'Blazing Saddles' and 'Airplane', both are which are generally regarded as comedy classics, contain a number of extremely weak lines ('Shirley not!' for example) but these films work well in their entirety, and I think Black Sheep deserves the same leeway, especially as it comes from a less well-established production company and seems to have been made on a much tighter budget.

reply

I don't think the feng sheui thing was supposed to be very funny, I think it's there just to let you know what an annoying hippy this hot blonde girl really is.

reply

> contain a number of extremely weak lines ('Shirley not!' for example)

you can't mean the classic:

"Surely you can't be serious."

"I am serious... and don't call me Shirley."

made everyone howl in the cinema when I saw it - one of the best lines in the film along with the control tower take-off scene

reply

(Phone rings)

It's the hospital for you....

Oh no! What is it?

Well, it's a big place with lots of doctors, but that's not important right now.

reply

Brilliant film. The humour and over the top gore was magnificent. I loved when the sheep came storming down the hill a la LOTR.

reply

There was only one feng shui line, and it was my favourite of the film.

That said, a lot of the other New Agey jokes fell rather flat. Though: "I thought you of all people would appreciate efforts to deconstruct the colonialist paternalistic agrarian hierarchy that disenfranchises the Tangata Whenua and erodes the natural resources of Aotearoa" is a helluva line! How many takes do you reckon?

reply

I thought the feng shui joke was hilarious. It was one of the lines that caused the loudest laughs when I was watching it with my friends on DVD. By the way, I recommend to have some alcohol in your blood when you are watching this kind of movies...

reply

I agree on just about everything you said except for one thing. What did you mean by the "porno-violence of Cube, Saw, Hostel and the rest"? You can't mean they're extremely violent to the point of pornographic, because none of those contain any cringe-worthy scenes (believe me, I'm a connoisseur of gore). You also can't mean they're violence for the sake of violence (okay, Hostel was, as are Saw 2 and 3) because Cube and Saw (mainly Cube) are intelligent thrillers that don't thrive on violence.

Please clear up what you were trying to say, I'm confused.

You can't argue with my logic! Well, you can, but I won't listen!

Saw's an intelligent thriller?
It's poorly written. Too poor to be even considered an adequate thriller.
Hostel is very pornographic. Gory and pornographic.

Children these days thrive on blood and tits, screams and moans, decapitations and penetrations. It's all in good fun I guess. Gets your heart pacing and your blood pumping. You get an erection and a dose of adrenaline. The perfect date movie is hostel :D

There's gold up in them hills! Grab a shovel and some buckets! We're comin' back rich!

reply

Okay, Saw wasn't a really great thriller, but it was still far from simply porno-violence. As for Hostel being very pornographic, gory and pornographic, well, that's just wrong. It never showed penetration, nor even genitals, so it was far from pornographic. As for the gore, well, Hostel's not very violent at all. I love films that could truly be considered porno-violence, like August Underground's Mordum, but I still love witty humour such as Black Sheep.

It's not as if you can have one or the other. I watched black sheep yesterday and the Halloween remake. Black sheep is a funny, quirky movie where Halloween was brutal and bleak. I loved them both.

As for pornographic...what is this...the puritan corner of the web? Different types of movies are meant to make people feel and react different ways. Movies aren't always easy to swallow. If you don't like a certain sub-genre of horror, don't watch it...but please do not fault others for doing so.

reply

for me saw was a good movie...and it had a great plot twist in the end
saw 2 and 3 where crap and not worth watching
Hostel for me was nothing!!!! they are just being tortured in a chair? hostel was suposed to be a really gory movie and i was disapointed at how little gore there was.

But also dont compare black sheep to theese 2.....its a comedy its not suposed to scare you at all. Youre suposed to laugh. not cover your eyes. Some people dont see this and complain about bad acting?!?!?!?
i say MORE BAD ACTING it only makes these movies better. The worse the actor is then all the more funnyer it gets!! Come on. Nothing in theese movies is supposed to be serious so the director gets the privelage to do whatever he wants.

reply

I thought Saw 3 was quite clever, in the way it had a start, middle and clever(ish) end... or at least the end made 'me' say, well done. Saw, nothing special.

Watching Black Sheep now... It's nuts!

reply

I can't wait to see it. I too see it in the same light as American Werewolf. It's not to be taken as a serious horror or even a full on comedy, more like a black comedy. You kind of laugh at the gore, like in American Werewolf with all the ghouls, it's funny but horrific with all the rotton flesh hanging off them.

reply

[deleted]

It's agreat little flick - some people are OUTRAGED at the fact that they didn't laugh enough or get scared enough. To me it did exactly what it said on the box: equal parts laughter and gore.

reply

Honestly, I didn't find all that much funny in blacksheep at all. The lines were cliche and cheesey, too cheesey for even a B movie. It seemed to me it was relying on it's premise for most of the comedy, as I got more laughs out of the trailer than I did the movie. I enjoy my B horror/comedies as much as the next person, mostly Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness. Also I enjoyed Young Frankenstein and Galaxy Quest, though admittedly I haven't seen Shaun of the Dead or An American Werewolf.

And if you want to judge my film taste, these are my top 10 movies.

1. Seven Samurai
2. Barry Lyndon
3. The Street Fighter
4. Sin City
5. Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky
6. Oldboy
7. Gojira
8. Pulp Fiction
9. To Be or Not to Be (1942)
10. The Fisher King

reply

Fair enough - no one that likes Riki-Oh can be all bad!

reply

Why is it when someone doesn't like something a moron like you has to make a comment? Who the *beep* do you think you are God? What we must share the same opinion as you. Get over yourself.

I loved An American Werewolf in London and Shaun of the Dead. Evil Dead 2, Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein. Than we have the so bad it's good movies like Pieces and Slugs. Jesse James Meets Frankenstein's Daughter.

So yeah I think I get it. Black Sheep sucked. Boring, boring and more boring. It was mindless fun only without the fun.

The phone is dead. Do you hear that, Vitus? Even the phone is dead.

You people are all so funny. One is that everyone is entitled to their own opinion and while the OP listed many movies I like as his favorites I also enjoyed Moulin Rouge and while Bourne Ultimatum was not a masterpiece it was at least fun. Now when it comes to pornographic horror films; to the person who said it wasn't pornographic because there was no intercourse, the term in reference to horror films does not mean sexually but simply gore for gores sake. See because porn is sex for the sake of watching sex. Unfortunately I am afraid you at least helped the OP's point about IQs being only slightly higher than your age. Back to the OP . You have this rant in which you bash movies that are enjoyable and why do you do this? Because they felt Black Sheep wasn't brilliant. Well honestly it wasn't. It was enjoyable and I like the genre. I love Shaun of the Dead though even that was not perfect, nor the be all end all of Horror/Comedies mostly due to the standstill at the end of the film. While you may not have enjoyed Moulin Rouge it was a good movie but may not have been aimed at your taste in films. I do notice a severe lack in anything to support your credibility when it comes to movies. You list in your posting many main stream movies that are good horror comedies but really nothing to show you have anything but a passing knowledge and a stick up your ass. Now Riki-Oh, there is a funny movie or Fido was a touching film while having a nice zombie humor about it. I am curious what your top 10 films list would look like? Course the idea of a top ten list when it comes to films is in itself sorta stupid because no film is perfect and each can be enjoyed in different moods and for different reasons. I enjoy Le Salaire de la peur or The Wages of Fear but sometimes I would prefer a lighthearted musical or a popcorn action flick such as Die Hard or Lethal Weapon. Each movie I just listed is great for different reasons and my enjoyment of them isn't a reflection on my intelligence. In fact if my IQ were only slightly higher than my age I would be as old as Methuselah.

I SECONDED THAT AMEN :)

I like how the TC said something about porno-movies when this movie had a penis in it. So you could classify this in there.

Am I being mature about this? No. Should I be? No.
