I believe that most French actors are superior to American ones. There are not many who can out act Gerard Depadieu, Daniel Auteuil, Jean Rochefort, Jean Reno, Johnny Hallyday, Yves Montand and Vincent Cassells Oscar :o)

yup, i agree with all of them! French movies are also FAR superior to American movies. Than said we do get some cool movies from the US once in a while.

reply

IMHO, I find that French Films an actors tend to make you feel involved in the story, and the actors tend to be easily identifiable, like people you actually know. The same can be said for Spanish, Italian, Korean and even English films.

Agreed, Auteuil and Depardieau in particular. I thought they were both perfect in 36 Quai des Orfevres. I'm not so sure about Jean Reno though, he's not always particularly convincing, but Vincent Cassel is great. Jean Reno/Vincent Cassel were great in The Crimson Rivers.

reply

Concur, but I would like to add another actors who acting skills have mesmerised me recently, Gael Garcia Bernal. He like the above Cassel, Auteuil and Depardieau has the ability to encompass all the acting skills.

Too many films buddy, but I suggest for starters, "Motor Cycles Diaries" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0318462/ and "The Science Of Sleep" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0354899/, "Babel" you may already know about, "And Your Mother Too" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0245574/ oh and the excellent "Loves A Bitch" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0245712/.

All the above films are brilliant, if you do not believe my word, the ratings on the IMDB will confirm this. Hope you enjoy them mate :)

Oh him, yea he was excellent in Motorcycle Diaries, don't remember him in Babel though (where did his character come into the story) and I haven't seen the other two though I'm keen for "And Your Mother Too" as Alfonso Cuaron is a favourite director of mine.

reply

He played Santiago with his famous quote; From Babel (2006)
Tom: My mum said Mexico is dangerous.
Santiago: [in Spanish] Yes, it's full of Mexicans.
I can personally recommend "Science of Sleep", an unusual film with some bizarre images, certainly a film that will stick in your mind for all the right reasons, and the more hard hitting "Loves A Bitch" (Amores perros), Three interconnected stories about the different strata of life in Mexico City all resolve with a fatal car accident. Octavio is trying to raise enough money to run away with his sister-in-law, and decides to enter his dog Cofi into the world of dogfighting. After a dogfight goes bad, Octavio flees in his car, running a red light and causing the accident. Daniel and Valeria's new-found bliss is prematurely ended when she loses her leg in the accident. El Chivo is a homeless man who cares for stray dogs and is there to witness the collision.
If you cannot download them Commander may I suggest either www.play.com or www.hmv.com/dvds, both have P&P free and both are excellent for a cheap way of enhancing your film library. Good luck mate :)

Without any doubt Daniel is the best french actor alive. Since the 1st time I saw him in Jean de Florette, I got impressed by his acting skills.

I have seen lots of films where Daniel plays all kind of characters and he never fails. He is always brilliant.

The only french actor that could be a good match to Daniel is Gérard Depardieu. Another excellent actor but unlike Daniel Auteuil, Gérard have had some awful performances in totally forgettable films. Perhaps if Gérard could stop making 15 films per year he could choose better projects and to focus more on them...

Jean Reno? well, he's a good actor as well, cool and all that but he ain't in the same league than the aforementioned actors.

Who else? Jean-Hugues Anglade? mmm I doubt it.
Benoît Magimel? he's a good prospect but needs more mileage before we could compare him with the rest.
Who else?

PS: Gael García Bernal is perhaps the best young actor currently, but we are talking about french actors, aren't we? Gael is mexican.

reply

I agree 100% per 100% about french actors, but I thing Garcia Bernal is at the moment only a good actor, but nothing more.

He is so young and he has a lot to show us...
