Francois' girlfriend is not a 'friend'?

I really enjoyed this film but i have one burning question - why is Francois' girlfriend not for one minute regarded as a potential 'friend'......? If i was sitting next to my boyfriend in a group and someone suggested he didn't have any friends, I would be mortified that they didn't consider me his friend, if not his best friend! One may as well be called a 'bonk buddy' and be done with it! Not that there aren't people very happy with being that but it is generally a mutually agreed situation and most conventional relationships have a basis of or at least include friendship. i just found that very strange and a little misogynist to be honest. Otherwise i love the way the French are happy to explore relationships of all sorts between men in their films, and show their loving and emotional sides.

I asked myself the same question Annabella and you could be right. May be they just considered each other "bonk buddies".

When Francois wanted to introduce her to Bruno, SHE declined the offer saying something along the lines of "I prefer you when you are alone".

They were intimate without having an intimately close relationship or friendship I guess which is sad. The pathos was always close to the humour in this film IMO. May be their relationship changed later. I can't remember if she was at his birthday party.

It didn't ever come into my mind that the writers (Leconte was involved) were being misogynistic.

Good question, my thinking is that Francois is a man of status and "wealth" (in quotes because of his financial problems). His colleagues do not find him likable and may have assumed his girlfriend was more into his checkbook than him as a person. It was still rude of them to discount her as a friend in front of her face, but it was a very rude conversation to begin with.

didnt the girlfriend mention something about wishing that he were her friend or something?
