Why didn't he say he was WRONGLY convicted of rape ?

Julia could have quickly shot down that accusation and they could have continued on in their relationship without that big obstacle.

I wondered the same thing. But this movie makes it confusing. One minute it's he's wrongly convicted but served time because he couldn't prove it. Then later in the film the Tv announcer says that he was wrongly convicted. Which makes a plot hole because when his children's mother try's to use it against him in court. This would have been thrown out because he would have been exonerated of the charges. For the TV announcer to know he was convicted wrongly this had to be on public records. Which his judge and lawyer should have already known. The movie doesn't make it clear if he was let out because of new evidence or he served time but could never prove he didn't do it but people "know" he didn't do it.

And to add to the confusion, the mother's lawyer claimed that Monty was convicted 16 years ago, sentenced to 8 years and has been on probation ever since his release. So how do we go from that to "he was wrongly convicted"? They don't bother to tell how us how the wrongfulness was supposedly established. If this wrongful conviction is public knowledge, why would he still be on probation? And wouldn't this have come out when Social Services got involved after the fire?

I won't even start on how stupid it was for Monty to try to get custody of his daughters and not tell his lawyer he was convicted of a sex crime.

I like several of the actors in this movie, which is why I stuck it out until the end, but the above is just a small example of why this movie failed for me.

I feel the same as you. I give the movie a "C" because I like the actors and actresses but this issue makes the movie hard to watch and take serious.

In real life, if he was wrongly convicted, that statement would not hold up in court. I don't think that lawyers and judges are as dumb, has this movie makes them out to be. And Julia not letting Monty explain, made me dislike her. Granted Monty should have said something about it, but her not letting him tell his side of the story, made me wish Monty would not end up with her.

Well here's what I told my mother, she is a LAWYER, and she DOES work in the criminal field, she doesn't know how to do background checks on people?

Right?! But apparently, in Tyler Perry Land, there are no such things as background checks (or congeniality, for that matter)

I'm not going to just pass judgement on Tyler Perry's writing.
A lot of movies rely on the fact that adults don't communicate or have common sense.
