Why do people like Tyler Perry?

I've seen his stage plays (Meet the Browns), and they were kind of funny. But Diary of a Mad Black Woman was just a bad movie. Then he made another movie with the grandmother, now this.

Who keeps giving this guy funding to make movies? I just don't get it?

-Everybody! Get this! Did you hear this thing about Scientology? Turns out it's bad...

reply

I don't get it either marxistbros370...I think his work does nothing but perpetuate stereotypes about black people. I agree with you regarding DIARY OF A MAD BLACK WOMAN and I think the character of Madea is just an embarassment to black people everywhere.

reply

people can relate to his stories. every black person has a medea in their fam or knows someone who does, and that's what makes his plays and movies comfortable. if you don't know you can't understand. but you don't have to understand as long as he is cashing his paychecks!

His films are not for those who like to think. They certainly appear melodramatic and emotional but are overdone. However, in our dim society, you have to overdo it for people who've not yet learned to appreciate subtle acting/dialogue, clever narrative devices, reflections on reality, or good cinematography.
His films are for people who can't tell the difference in quality between the Color Purple and Daddy's Little Girls, people who only occasionally go to movies and could give a crap less about whether the events in the films are even remotely realistic or logical.
Plus, his generic movie dialogue is great for trailers.

You just insulted everyone who likes his movie's and plays. Tyler Perry is the only one makein quality black family movies. I don't know anyone who'd even put Color Purple and Daddy's little girls in the same breath for comparison.

reply

Yes! Because The Color Purple is so much more realistic and impactful. So I insulted everyone who likes Tyler Perry, you didn't exactly offer a powerful counter-argument.
And please! What exactly is one of these "family" movies? Daddy's Little Girls featured rape, drug dealing, and a woman using a vibrator. And the worst part is, the movie endorsed the notion of communities scheming together to manipulate the law. And Boyz N Tha Hood wasn't a family movie, but it at least had a more powerful, positive, and better delivered message than many of the Tyler Perry films.
Also, I called the Perry fans simple, and you didn't exactly prove me wrong with your bad grammar and malapropism (the word you're looking for is "breadth").

I love Tyler Perry and I love his movies.

Tyler Perry makes films that do NOT depict "typical black people" that so many other stupid stereotypical movies do! It's a shame that ANYONE would like any of those types of movies, ie The Lottery, could it BE anymore stereotypical?? I love Daddy's Little Girls cuz I refuse to believe ALL black men run out on their families! Diary Of A Mad Black Woman was AWESOME and if you actually believe it's not, you are a sad individual. Why Did I Get Married was realistic as well and completely believable.

OH maybe you don't like his movies because he INSISTS on having his black actors speak eloquently and annunciate their words, instead of sounding like they refuse to learn the English language and sound as if they have crap in their mouths.

Another great movie of his is The Family That Preys.... just a great movie!

I think you really mean enunciate, right? You're not helping your case here!

By the way, just because someone doesn't like Tyler Perry movies doesn't mean they like other movies that degrade or misrepresent Black people instead. I just want to make sure that's clear.

I will just answer your question in regards to why I like him. He makes me laugh ~ I grew up watching his plays starting with Diary of a Mad Black Woman (there was actually another that I first saw but can't think of title at moment). Let's just say ... if he was ever in my town I would see his plays. Sadly I did not care for Meet The Browns (the play initially on stage but bought it on DVD later) ... Perhaps because it did not have Tyler in it (rather he was as Madea or as an older male character).

I love to see him take characters over the top. Sadly and Gladly I can say I feel both ways about his movies. Sadly he is not able to go away from the scripts like he would on stage but glad that he is one out of a few who can make that transition. Which I believe is what ticks ppl off ... they believe he got it easy somehow for making such a huge transition. I just see him doing what he would on stage but placing it out there in a larger scale for more ppl to notice. But this is just my opinion.

Why not? I mean its no need to make a federal case out of what has a simple solution. If you don't like the movies, don't watch. If he's not soliciting funds from your purse or pockets, why do you care where he gets the money from? Stop watching! Stop complaining.

Although they are horrible, his movies make a sh*t ton of money either at the theater or on television later on. Like Michael Bay or one of those Nicolas Sparks POS.

They are a guilty pleasure though. I'll give dude that.
