MovieChat Forums > Daddy's Little Girls (2007) Discussion > why does this movie just score under 2.9...

why does this movie just score under 2.9/10 ??

I mean i have seen plenty of movies that would warrant it, but this certainly doesn't!!!

It certainly doesn't deserve high praise as a master piece, but less than 3 out of ten, come on.

I gave it 10/10 just to help bump it up a little bit.

If you look at the break down of the votes, you'll find 33.4 percent of people gave it 1 out of 10, but only 3.7 percent gave it 2!!! Something smells fishy.

I think this movie should lie between 6 and 7.5.

I personally give it 6, i liked the story but didn't so much like some of the cardboard cut out characters, no depth or reality to them.

mother = hates her mom, hates the girls father, willing to destroy her kids life to get back at mum/girls father. Doesn't explain why she hates her mum so much why se went so far off the rails.

there are others but, that was the biggy!!

For all it's faults i liked the movie and it should deserve better here on imdb.

Why would people vote a movie so low just because it is a predominately black movie, is beyond me.

I dont have a problem sitting thru a black movie, even enjoying it

reply

Maybe some people don't think like you do? Perhaps the people who voted honestly didn't care for the movie?

It would be interesting if the people who voted so low turned out to be black. Wouldn't you have egg on your face then?

did you bother to read the whole post? |I mean i plainly said it wasn't a master piece, but 1/10 is just ridiculas,

Votes Percentage Rating
462 28.8% 10
75 4.7% 9
118 7.4% 8
115 7.2% 7
66 4.1% 6
78 4.9% 5
55 3.4% 4
42 2.6% 3
59 3.7% 2
534 33.3% 1

Arithmetic mean = 5.5. Median = 6

to look at it another way, 48% of people gave it a 6/10 or more?

take another look at those figures,, the average score was 5.5/10 or median of 6!!

why such a disparage between those numbers and it's imdb rating.

Isn't it about time that people just admit that this movie stinks. It's not just the racist voters, it's also the fact that this movie is terrible. It makes me mad that a movie like this is being argued about on a daily basis while a movie like Talk to Me is barely seen. Talk to Me is a great movie and blows crap like this out of the water. Too bad we're busy waiting for the next movie where Martin/Eddie/Tyler Perry/Damn near every black comic, dresses as an overweight black woman as all black folks roll in the isles with laughter. Black movie making is in a horrible state when movies like Daddy's Little Girls are what we have to look forward too.

So it was THAT terrible to mke it the worst films ever made out of all the films made out this entire human life?! Even that sounds exaggerated but since you say terrible=one of the worst films ever made makes you sound stupid. You all know this shouldn't be in the bottom 100 because it was "terrible". I even call a terrible film a 4/10.

Last 3 years nobody votes fair.
If they didnt watch a movie , but there is an actor in the movie wich they hate.
Automaticly they vote for 1 star.

A great movie about a man who does what he can to provide for his girls, but at the same time clings to the community that raised him. And just so you know, the community silence theme in the movie is all to freaking real. Its sad but its true. This movie made me sad, happy, angry, depressed and any other emotion i could possibly have. 9/10

I am personally WHITE myself and this film is very good. I don't understand why the rating is so low. So, I am voting 10 out of 10 to show my support to this film.

reply

people voted low cause no one wants to see a good father struggling with a bad mother on screen and its a tyler perry movie

First, I am a white chick and have only seen pieces parts of this movie. However, from the parts I have seen, I think this one is better than "Diary of an Angry Black Women." I need to catch the whole thing when it is on again.

Yes, it is loaded with cliches but so are a lot of Perry's movies. But, I prefer this one, especially since he does not appear in this movie dressed as Madea. House of Payne, now and then, is not bad either.

I agree with the OP, this movie should not have as low of a rating as it does and it should have at least about a 5.

Finally, there are more movies involving blacks that are not just gangsta, and black men dressing as sassy grandmas... such as, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Life, and Two Can Play That Game.

You know that sound Goofy makes when he falls? That's my quote.

Because the movie sucks, I am a black woman and am getting so sick of other blacks crying "racism" when the fact of the matter is the movie was just bad. My 5 year old nephew could have written a better script.

reply

AS a matter of fact I am white and happen to agree that it was a decent film... It is called a chick flick, duh! Everyone has an opinion and I highly doubt a five year old could do better seeing that half of five year olds do not even know how to write their name correctly! I enjoyed it and who cares how it is rated, half of ratings are crap anyway.

reply

I don't understand the rating either.I would give it a 6.5 or 7 also!

reply

i was completely surprised to see such a good movie to have less than 5/10. really are you serious??!! i know this is jus cos its a black movie. but you know wat it dont matter. i think its a great movie and anyone that want a feel good movie get this. you'll feel it, trust me.

reply

I think the story was interesting and decent enough, but the overall quailty of the film makes it seem rushed, the editing is somewhat crappy, Tyler Perry even admitted it himself, and the backgrounds of the characters aren't really explained, why does the mom hate the dad, why did he leave her? everything just seems spontaneous, don't forget the fact that the dad didn't confess to being falsely accused of rape when he had the chance

but still, the film was relatiively okay for the most part, just some massive plotholes and too many uptight movie fans who can't get past those kinds of things

*Edit: oh, btw if you couldn't already notice, I'm TERRIBLE at remembering the names of movie characters*

Why do they have cult films?

But we all agree that there is something fishy about the ratings of the films that happen to have a predominantly Black cast, right?

That's the important thing. Heck, this movie shouldn't have anything less than a 4 or a 5. It's almost like some users ENJOY putting these kinds of films down. How the heck is that an enjoyable experience?

No, we don't.
Not those of us with intelligence.

That's not entirely true. I mean, look at Barbershop, Talk to Me, and Hustle and Flow. Those have a predominantly black cast and yet they managed to have a pretty accurate rating. I haven't seen Daddy's Little Girls so I can't really comment on how good/bad it is, but I don't think it's fair to say that a lot of people who rate the movies are racist.

reply

You'll never hear me call anyone racist, BTW. I'm not directly insinuating this.

reply

Well, the courtroom scenes were a bit silly, and I'm not sure I like how the movie wrapped up, with violence ultimately being the answer, and nobody willing to testify as to what actually happened. Even the amazing climax scene was marred by some terrible choreography (punches missing very obviously and by a lot).

BUT, overall I thought the movie was an inspiration, and Monty was a great character and role model (though the aforementioned climax scene makes him a much more interesting character and certainly a lesser role model). The acting was good, and the overall storyboard and characters were good. Personally, I enjoyed this movie a lot more than most others in the genre, and I'm giving it a 9 because I found the movie enjoyable the whole way through, and also moving.

The movie had some flaws, but by any measure, an IMDB rating under 5 is ridiculous, and it seems common for predominantly black movies to have much lower ratings than they deserve. Something around 6 or slightly above would be the norm for a film such as this.

reply

I think the reason why black movies are ranked so low on IMDB is because people just misunderstand black people and culture, yes, some of them are overstereotypical(like The Cookout and Who's Your Caddy for example), but the ones that people accuse of being overstereotypical like Madea's Family Reunion are actually pretty realistic, and outside of a few fart jokes there's not really any bathroom/kiddie humor, rap music, poserthugs, or made up slang in that movie

and i'm black myself, so I have firsthand experience, I can easily tell which black movies are too stereotypical and exaggerated and which ones are realistic and make sense, I wouldn't call it racism, just people who don't understand how black people and culture works

I gave it a 7

Before I saw the movie I checked the rating here and was shocked to see it was below 3 after a bunch of my friends told me it was not that bad.

After watching it I give it 5/10. Heck, I have seen alot worse movies and they are rated 7 and 8.

On a side note, after reading all the comments on this thread I think it is safe to say that the majority of the black viewers hated it and the majority of the white viewers liked it.

Any idea why that is?

The movie was pretty bad. It's a made for tv movie. Not even a good one at that. Immediately once there is 1's it's racism. People can vote how they want. It doesn't say anywhere on here that they can't. Who are you to say that the 1 wasn't warranted? I bet a movie made with all white people praising the white lifestyle would get a 2.9 by all the blacks upset that there is not a black person in it. Racism has flipped to black against white pretty quickly.

reply

Exactly...

1 out of 10? This movie was pretty decent... No way does it warrant a 1 out of 10 and quite possibly the worst movie ever status... I honestly think people just vote 1 out of 10 just to do it... Give me a break... 'cism.
