completely racist

I've seen this posted elsewhere on this board and i don't feel that it was met with a proper reaction. In a commercial shown in regular rotation on network television and basic cable a young black child makes a blatantly racist comment. A black girls introduces her name as Julia, and after doing this, another black girl replies with, "isn't that a white girl's name?" Being a white female, I am very offending by this. I feel that if a young white girl made the same comment regarding a stereotypical "black girl" name, the black community would be in an uproar and the commercial would probably get pulled. People have the right to make whatever kind of movie they want and although I am offended by it, Tyler Perry has the right to include this dialogue in his film. However, the fact that it's on a frequently shown commercial is continuously offensive. Anybody offering an excuse for this is just another person not willing to admit the fact that racism against whites exists in the country.

Oh, yeah. Tyler Perry isn't a racist and neither are you.

Grow up and get a life.

exactly. if anything perry is exposing how we as black people can be ignorant about ourselves and judging ourselves based on names. its a bit funny. racist is the wrong word to use. racism means to hold power over a group based on that groups race. there is no way that commercial is more offensive than the n-word, or the f-word of mean things about jews or calling someone a honkey or poor white trash. now that *beep* is racist. so yes i have to agree that you need to go get a life.

"poor oppressed white people."

Exactly. You said it brother. Y'know I was turned down for a loan for a new extension on my house last week? Damn! I took some of the hundreds of thousands I'd saved up for that particular investment and went out and bought myself an acoustic guitar! Now I sit on my enclosed, heated patio, and play the blues, brother, 'cos I knows how it all feels! Sometimes I even sit and play ma geetar in my little rubber canoe that I use in my heated swimming pool. I with it now. I know the pain. Live the life, brothers :-0

I'm one of the oppressed white people...but I enjoyed the movie and would give it a 6.5 or 7.(I really enjoy the movies Gabrielle Union are in.)

reply

I'm sorry, but you are in error.
Racism does NOT mean "to hold power over a group based on that groups race"

I don't know where you got such a notion, but Racism is "a BELIEF that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race".

your "definition" is a cop out and an easy way to let your particular race of the hook of this very human frailty. Be more intellectually honest about this.

It is not necessarily what she said, it is how she says it. The nasty little brat says it like it is bad to have a "white" name.

Why is she a "nasty little brat?"

reply

2. Discrimination or prejudice based on race.

Exactly, it's a prejudice about the name and it's said in a nasty way.

She was shocked that a black girl had a "white" sounding name.

reply

i dont think so, white people make blatantly racist remarks all the time, they just dont understand because institutionalized racism runs around tv land like strippers around poles.

reply

^I have to agree... alot of times it can even be unintentional, just the way the person was raised.

To the Opening Poser, if you saw a white girl with the name Letisha what would you think?

It is not racism it is ignorance. Just like when black kids are academically sharp they are said to be( by a minority of idiots) to be 'acting white'? In fact I'm sure if the kid in the film got straight A's and was accused of 'acting white' you wouldn't be talking about racism would ya

At my friend's work place there is a man there called Marvin. A white man. My friend says this has caused confusion because when people have come in the office to look for him they are expecting a black man. Is it racist for the people( who have included whites) to assume that a man with the name Marvin has to be black?

MUST. DO. BETTER!

reply

Understand that I think tyler perry can put whatever he wanted in his movies, I JUST DIDNT THINK IT WAS APPROPRIATE TO BE IN A COMMERCIAL THAT RAN CONSTANTLY! I did and still do think that girl's comment is rude. I couldn't imagine ever seeing a commercial in regular rotation in which the same is said about a black girls name. If it's offensive to some, then I think it's inappropriate for commercials, period.

reply

I honestly think that Tyler Perry was poking fun at the stereotypes that we as Black people have.I don't think it was a racist moment at all. Now someone running around calling people the n-word or poor white anything is racist. That's not what he was doing. I'm not trying to discredit your opinion, but I think you may be grasping at straws with this one. My husband, who is white, watched the same commercial and laughed at it.
