What is the big twist at the end of the pilot?

reply

(SPOILER ALERT) When the carrier transporting the Robinsons is attacked by aliens, the Robinsons try to leave in their pod, but Will is trapped outside in the corridor and captured. John goes out after him and succeeds in rescuing Will. But as he returns and they launch the pod, it turns out David went out to try and rescue John. So David is left behind and either killed or captured. Thus the series would have proceeded with just Judy, Will and Penny like the original. But John did declare at the end he would find a way to rescue David.

There was a big possibility that David was captured by the aliens. Something that could be used later in a series!

**SPOILER ALERT**
Like brimfin said. The promise to rescue David, however, was a weak point in the plot IMO. John was probably meant to say it to keep Maureen from breaking down, but the way it's presented makes it sound like an overarching plot device. The Jupiter carrier ship is seen completely distintegrating from the alien attack, and the Jupiter 2 podship then plunges out of control though a wormhole; although it's laid out that Earth civilization has spanned the galaxy and there's a chance that the Robinsons and West can figure out where they are, West's reaction to the wormhole suggests that this won't be possible. In addition, nothing is said about why the aliens would take prisoners, assuming that David survived.

That said, however, there could have been a number of interesting developments had this gone to series. Not much is said about the aliens at all, but John in this version is a war hero (instead of a scientist) who knows their tactics intimately. It makes no sense that the aliens boarded a transport they seemed intent on destroying, unless they were looking for someone in particular. When confronted by the boarding party, John put up a fight but David seemed to resign himself to his fate. If the aliens were after John, they may have spirited David away to safety before the Jupiter carrier exploded in order to use him against John. Relations between John and David were already strained; in this version with no "Dr. Smith" character, might the design have been for an alien-brainwashed David to become the antagonist in the Robinsons' midst?
