How do we know they had sex?

In the scene where DJ and April are talking to each other in the morning, and then DJ says, "I think we need to talk," and then walks in April's room as the scene shifts, how do we know they had sex? Reading movie reviews from critics and others, many people have said that the scene hints that they were sexually immoral, but how can they tell? We are given no hint as to what happened.
