I really enjoyed this movie. I've always liked movies that are just about life and people dealing with it, whether or not that means a happy ending or that the characters that learn from it.
What are other similar movies like this that just portray life how it is.
Autumn Hearts a.k.a. "Emotional Arithmetic" - about a family dealing with a woman's traumatic past
Away From Her - about a man & woman dealing with Alzheimer's disease
New York Serenade - about two friends dealing with their differences
Phoebe in Wonderland - about a family dealing with their young daughter's disorder
Wildflowers - about a teenage girl with no mother growing up in a post-hippy environment
All of these are nice movies about real life with pacing similar to "The Savages". No car chases, contrived love affairs or Hollywood cheese. I highly recommend "Away From Her" (starring Julie Christie).
You might try any of the movies by Mike Leigh, if you don't mind delving into British film. Some favorites of mine are "Happy Go Lucky" and "Secrets and Lies."
Like one of the other posters, I strongly recommend "You Can Count on Me." Also about a brother-sister relationship.
Two recent ones centering on an upcoming wedding: "Rachel Getting Married," and "Margot at the Wedding." These are both a bit more intense because the main characters in each (played by Anne Hathaway and Nicole Kidman) are difficult to like women: personality issues, controlling, manipulative. But very realistic as the family members try to accommodate.
Oh, and I forgot. I really like the films of Nicole Holofcener. She's not to everyone's taste - the characters in her films can come across as very self-centered and taking for granted their own privileges. But I like them quite a bit - especially because they usually feature Catherine Keener. I like "Lovely and Amazing," and "Walking and Talking." Her more recent ones "Friends with Money" and "Please Give" are also good but I didn't like them quite as much.
One of the things that separates one human from another is the way we deal with change. isn't it? Personally? I want to hear about the absurdities of life. I like observing how people deal with it all. I like those stories.
