Question about the end of the movie *spoilers*

At the very end, on the train scene, the man holds a picture of a little girl. Who is she? Maybe her daughter? Maybe I missed something... Thank you.

The name next to the photo in the final frame has the same surname as the Magician, so I'm guessing it was a daughter that maybe died, or that he has lost contact with.

The name on the photo in the closing sequence is 'Sophie Tatischeff', and I think I remember text along the lines of 'In memory of...' being next to the image. Sophie T was Jacques Tati's daughter; she died in 2001.

I had taken the image to be the daughter of the magician in the film: I've only just found references to Tati's daughter by searching on the web. Like several other things in the film, this is quite a subtle point: you aren't directly shown that the photo in the magician's hand is the one you later see close up. I wonder whether Sylvain Chomet knew Sophie, and perhaps discussed with her his proposed development of her father's screenplay.

It actually says "à Sophie Tatischeff". So "at Sophie Tatischeff"?

Maybe a French speaker could clarify that for us.

reply

"For Sophie Tatischeff"

A Dedication...

Long story...see http://bit.ly/dkigRT (While the movie is simply "bittersweet", the reality behind it is darker.)

throughout the film the magician gives to the girl and she takes. She never really gives back or thanks him. Throughout we see him look at the photo. Obviously it is his daughter and she is dead or lost to him somehow. This would explain the unconditional love for the little girl. Sad, since he loses his ability to perform with any conviction due to all the things he does to earn money to buy her things. A sad beautiful movie, in the vein of Silverstien's the Giving Tree.

Dictated, but not read.
