What did he sell at the pawn shop?*spoiler*

He didn't sell that man's puppet along with his stuff, did he?

I don't think so. They show the ventriloquist's puppet before he enters the store, and by the end you know that he has pawned most of his magic stuff (because he doesn't use it again but instead has been doing tricks in the shop window, etc.). By his final train ride he only has the small suitcase as everything else has been pawned. The rabbit scene is the most poignant and probably is why it made the cut.

He pawned his Magic Hat and all the magician equipment except the rabbit, who gets to join all the other rabbits on top of the escarpment over Edinburgh. When we get to briefly view this stuff in pawnshop window, we see that his Little Joe Hotel downstairs ventriloquist neighbor's puppet has been marked down to "Free." From the writing he's doing on train out of Edinburgh, we might figure he's decided to write a novel or screenplay. Maybe the story of The Illusionist?
