What if he kept the store gig?

What if Tatischeff had stayed in the store gig?

True, he was there to push the store's products. And we all know Sylvan Chomet just hates commercialism, understandably to a point. But notice the people gathered around the window. They seemed to really enjoy Tatischeff's work. They seemed more enthusiastic than the handful of bored audience members at his stage shows. Isn't that what's important, for people to be able to appreciate your work? I thought Tatischeff was achieving that goal, even if he was hawking products.

The character is an artist, as he moves from place to place with just his suitcase and his very few belongings. He has to earn every day some money. He cannot settle down to this position, and shift from arty entertainement to commercial acting. You're right, he met an audience doing that, but not the way he intends to. Do not forget the naive aspect of Tati, and his distrust toward materialism.

I think he was kind of pushed into it by the guy who represented him at the time-the same guy who helped him get the Music Hall performance gig.

He seemed to be saying that Tati would make a good profit, but even the Illusionist seemed apprehensive through the negotiations.

"Thanks, guys." "So long, partner."
