What year is this set in?

Mid-late 1950's or early 1960's?

Late 50's. The BBFC classification report says it's set in 1959, but I'm not sure where they get that from (I'm working from memory here and can't remember if it's mentioned directly in the film).

Jacques Tati wrote the script in 1956. However, Tatischeff in the film gets to watch the real Tati in a scene from "Mon Oncle", which was released in 1958. We can therefore assume "The Illusionist" is set in or after 1958.

At the very beginning of the film (ie, 0:00:08), it says Paris, 1959.
