Based on 1983 John Carpenter's 'Christine'?

I remember that some time ago, somewhere in the web, I read that Hellphone is slightly based on 1983 John Carpenter's Christine. In that film a boy buys a mysterious car which he calls Christine, and falls in love and becomes obsessed with it, and the car is evil and then it posess the boy and they try to kill the boy's girlfriend together, or so (you can find the synopsis here on imdb).
Hellphone is not yet released, but I can see that director James Huth has made a teen-horror-comedy film of Hellphone. I understand it's kind of a recipe for these movies to success, but I think it would have been super cool and weird (interesting like) if the director would have kept some of the original horror/bizarre escence of Christine (I mean if he would have omitted the comedy fact).
What do you guys think?

I actually didn't know it was rumored to be inspired from Carpenter's Christine...
I think the comedy aspect is nice because it's one of the best way to get to make critics and tell messages with subtelty and from the little i've seen of this film (which hasn't come out yet here) it tries to critic or laught at some things in the current world and French society (even if it's definitely primarily a teen comedy i guess and many won't see that deep into it sadly...).

the film has nothing in common with CHRISTINE !!!! The guy buys the phone in a chinese store (GREMLINS tribute 'cause the director is a Joe Dante big fan)but he doesn't really fall in love with it. The phone is more a kind of evil Aladdin lamp.

No. You're a nicely engineered sextoy ! Deal with it !

It's based on the book "Hellphone" by William Sleator. Nothing to do with Christine.

It seems a lot more like Gremlins in the tone than Stephen King's Christine, which isn't in any way as funny as Hellphone. The Carpenter movie doesn't look or sound like Hellphone. It's more like a Joe Dante-sque movie : a lot of references to catch in the frame, teenage humor and hysteric movie making.

"he calls Christine, and falls in love and becomes obsessed with it"

Actually Christine falls in love and becomes obsessed with him, she kills and destroys anyone who stands in her way.
