The significance of the year 1888?

All I can come up with is, that's the year Jack The Ripper did his thing and also the year Van Gogh lopped off his famous ear. Both are mentioned in the show.

Can anyone else think of interesting reasons that 1888 is the year Rich goes back to in the club?

There are a lot of layers to this show, so it's rewarding to look closely at the details.

Yeah, I remember hearing that it's subtly hinted that Charles is supposed to be Jack the Ripper, hence all the prostitutes.

1888 is also the year that the financial times was first published, in the very first episode Matt berry can be seen reading this newspaper after making the tea pot joke.

It should also be noted that in that episode the newspaper he is holding does look quite shabby and faded.

Indeed it is ... they say so on the DVD commentary :)

THANK YOU! That is a cool detail.

I've seen all the shows a bunch of times, but I haven't had a chance to get at the commentaries yet. I'm sure they will be fascinating.

I was hoping to find a link between the practice of capital punishment and the year 1888, but I can't find one.

It's also the only reason that Matt lets Rich in the club and puts up with his idiocy(in the context of the show that is!) to send to Sir Charles as a potential scapegoat for his crimes.. Sir Charles probably drugs Rich with a few sprinkles from that snuff box to erase his memory and so The Ripper escapes detection..

Nobody really knows who Jack Rippy was....
