Orignal but Losely based on the Truth

K, I really wanted to like this show. I know that producers were just out to make money for the show but I think the story would have been a bit more interesting if they based it completely off the truth of the bible. Yes, Lucifer is real and there was a war where he tried to take over but the angels were banished with him to the underworld. They are know has demons. The Powers that sent to kill the fallen or nephilim are a bit overbearing. They don't even praise God like real angel should. They show anger and are uncaring which is lil bit wrong to portray an angel. Overall it was ok but has I was watching it I kept thinking how better it could have been.

Bible = fiction

Taking license with the Biblical myths are no different than taking license with the story of Hercules. Each author crafts their own tale.

reply

Not quite...It's more like getting away from canon, which gets annoying after a bit...especially when it's taken out of context and used as a weapon...

big_bAAAAdy, the burden of proof is on the one claiming the incredible. If I said saw big foot, do you have to prove that I didn't see it or do I have to prove that I did?

reply

The truth according to whom? This series is based on old testament and hebrew teaching.
There is more than one valid religion, so don't dare to claim to know what is "the Truth".

reply

people its a tv show.............but it does portray the greator(g0d) as kinda a dick! I mean he send angels to kill 1/2 hum 1/2 angels? i thought he regarded humans higher than angels/ why would he destroy the best of both. thepowers are god's hitman! what that's a caring god!

reply

Um , The Powers were clearly driven by Their Own Biases , not The Creator`s Will , contrary to what they may have believed . This is pretty much confirmed by Michael`s Confrontation With Mazarin ( The Head Power after Camael`s Fall ) .

reply

Hey, the Bible has God wiping out most humans, punishing children for the sins of their parents, torturing Job on what amounts to a bet, killing infants in Egypt, condoning slavery, etc. The Bible portrays God as "kinda a dick" too, minus the "kinda" part.

I sometimes wish that imdb had a "like" button like facebook.

reply

I've wished that many times. Cause I would have liked the comment that way as well then. But I guess i have to write it now. And i agree with the comment. God in the bible is a vindictive God and not full of love. It's about control and punishment.

reply

Well, that's because the whole point of the bible in the first place is control and what the punishment will be if you defy that control. In fact, that can really be said of religions in general.

Still Shooting With Film!

reply

When it comes to the beginning of the world, the end of the world, or legions of invisible beings that intervene in human affairs there appears to be no valid religion.

*happy sigh* you all make me so happy. ^__^ Finally, sane people not preaching fire and brimstone from a fictional movie based on a fictional book. Yay!

reply

I am all for action. The second was lil better. The powers said they would cut off the traitor's wings in the name of the creator. Then when they talked about Lucifer having the destiny of starting the war it was pretty interesting. But hearing the angel swear doesn't really seem right when they are suppose to worship the creator.

Dismembering is ok but saying "damn" isn't?

No wonder Xian are all F'd up.

reply

I just started watching it out of curiosity. Doubt that I'll finish it due to TV14 violence and language. Toxic stuff. Yeah, the truth of the Bible scares the hell out of people. That's why they prefer to write and believe fiction that's loosely, very loosely based on truth. Easily to swallow. And from the responses below, this ole world is much darker than anyone previous might have thought.

Yes, Nephilim were real but they were destroyed. If you want to know why, read the Old Testament! Bible is the Truth, the whole Truth and nothing but the Truth. THAT is the TRUTH! Perhaps the movie will get folks interested in reading the Bible. We can only hope and pray that will happen!

Everyone says the same bloody thing...I'm right, you're wrong...so how can just one be right?

Me? I'm The Doctor...and I just snogged Madame de Pompadour!

reply

Amen. The Bible is true and there IS a war on against those who love God, perpetuated by those who don't, the non elect and demons. The movie only gives a shadow of reality, but it does show the devil as a deciever, even when or especially when he appears kindly.

reply

I don't think the Powers are portrayed the proper way, but I don't think they are overbearing either. Angels are not cute little chubby cherubs. They are fierce creatures who have killed, spilled blood, laid cities to waste, and brought empires to their knees. To quote from another good angelic movie, The Prophecy,

"You know when God wanted to punish someone, when someone needed a killing, he sent an angel. Can you imagine what a being like that must be like? Spending your entire existence praising your Creator, with one wing always dipped in blood."--Det. Daggett

"I'm an angel. I killed firstborn children while their mamas watched. I've turned kings to cripples and cities to salt and even when I feel like it, I rip the souls from little girls and from now until kingdom come, the only thing you can count on in your existence, is never understanding why."--Gabriel

I never really took the bible as anything but a really good fairy tale.

I am christian and obviously belive in it. But i have no problem wiht ppl messing with "cannon" because i know alot of ppl veiw it on par with ,say, greek myths. And i don't think that just becuase i belive something i should hold others to hold it sacredly.

And i also enjoy most stuff involving angels and demons and heavean and hell. Most notably the prophecy films,Fallen (Books only saw the first tv movie but i got the other 2 recorded so i'll eventually look at those),Preacher comics, ghost rider comics, and i'm a huge hellblazer fan. The only thing i've ever found that i didn't like was the arammagedon arc of spawn i just didn't liek the whole god an dthe devil are just bickering children thing. but otherwise i'm really open minded to ppls interpertations of the christian mythos

Timothy Dalton should get an Emmy and bash Saun Connery over the head with it!

reply

May I be the first to say, you rock, man! I only wish other Christians thought the same thing. I'm Jewish (though I do admit to viewing most religious things with a questioning eye) and I've gotten heat on other forums just for liking these books. *sigh* I just wish everyone else was as open-minded as you. Cheers!

reply

So far I just watched the first part. However I don't think that the Powers are portrayed as overbearing. The view that seems to be being upheld in the first part is that the Powers are acting on The Creators orders. However there is no scene of God actually ordering the Nephilim destroyed. Also the sheer idea that they are hlaf human falls on the "Free chocie" umbrella. I just think it's awesome that the Powers were the ones that were more demonic in nature than the Halfbreeds they were supposed to be killing.

reply

However there is no scene of God actually ordering the Nephilim destroyed.

Yup! Moreover, in the books, the Powers actually fall for going after the Nephilim. They even hint about that in the first part of the series where Verchiel can't actually hear God speaking to him anymore. Sorry, I have to refer to Verchiel as 'he'. Hardwired from the books.

2 points:

1)When you see someone messing with canon, it should be a challenge to reinforce your faith. Based on your post, your faith is unaffected by little things such as this show, and I applaud you for it.

2)Religion is an attempt to explain the Divine. I fear those who read the Bible LITERALLY are not understanding that the knowledge of God and Heaven may be ineffable=unable to be understood by humans in our terms. That may sound Agnostic, but God in the Old Testament tells Moses that if he sees God's face, he'll be with God. My interpretation is that humans can never know God until they return to the divine at death, so everything we read is, at best, an educated guess.

Just one point to make about this whole discussion...the war between heaven and hell is not mentioned in the Old Testament at any point and not told in the New Testament either. The story (myth, truth, whatever) is a piece of Apocrypha similar to the Book of the Watchers or other religious texts that did not make cut in the original cannon laid down after the destruction of the first temple when the rabbis decided to combine the texts outlining the religion in case the culture died out in the diaspora. In fact, the only time Satan is directly referenced (I mean directly, not interpretively, check your texts) is in Job (the Hebrew calls the one challenging G-d ha-Satan translated by some texts as "the Adversary" and some as Satan). So while the story of the sons of G-d having children with the daughters of men is in Genesis, the rest of the movie has no direct biblical, textual basis. Just a point that needed to be made.

God decides to let Moses see his ass instead!

"Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock: And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by , that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by : And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen."
