plot hole?

If anyone can help me with this it will be greatly appreciated

*mild spoiler alert*

Is it just me or does Sakura have no knowledge of her brother Shinji's death.
Furthermore, Shiro's acceptance of a confessed unremorseful killer, Ilya, is a bit misplaced and contradictory. Once again it may just be me, but I highly doubt it.

I do think Sakura have knowledge of what happend to her brother. but she hides her emotions. from the games plot we do learn that she indeed know more about magic that you should think (the game have 3 outcomes) and i dont really understand your second question. and it seems to me that Shiro is both NAIVE (alot naive) and forgiving. i mean Rin pretty much tried to kill him and they become "friends" Im sure he's thinking that they are only acting like they are because of the holy grail where and that might be why he is forgiving of Illyasviel. Also about sakura again from knowledge i have from reading about the game. i doubt she cares very much about her family.

reply

I think Sakura does notice. I also think, however, that she probably had knowledge of what he was doing (which is alluded to in the anime, not sure of the game).

Also, his terse "friendship" with Ilya during their fighting seemed to set up her staying at his house pretty well.

reply

She would've had to know what he was doing, cause Rider was originally going to her. At least that's what I remember hearing, the only reason her brother got her was because she gave Rider to him. So all in all, it seems it would've been rather expected an outcome.

reply

Ilya was created by her family to be a vessel for the Holy Grail. Shiro believes that it's not her fault, regardless that she is unremorseful, and accepts her because he feels she was used and needs help.

And I wish Lancer hadn't died....

O.K., that actually clears things up a bit (a bit). It just seemed like there was a lot of incomplete character development.

It makes a LOT more sense once the entire story comes out.
*Massive freakin Spoiler Warning*
For example, it is implied that Ilya is Emiya's foster sister (His adopted father's artificially inseminated child). That kinda makes it make sense that he has a connection with her.
Sakura was taught by her Grandfather about magic, as was Shinji. In the game, she was the original summoner of Rider, but gave her to Shinji (he pursuaded her to....dunno why). She had her memeries erased at one point, but i'm a little vague on the details....

Ok, that is at least an answer I can accept, but on it's own, the series lacks some character development.

The story had to be shortened for the anime adaptation. The game gives a LOT more detail. Use wiki for more info, or trawl F/SN forums.

Believe me, that's the first thing I did after viewing the series but, a stand alone series that long should have sufficient character development on it's own w/out relying on an established fanbase, that's all.

The fact is, that if development of the minor characters was going to happen (make no mistake, shinji and sakura ARE minor characters), then the series would have to be lengthened.

The minor characters have more significance in the game, but the anime focuses more on the major characters such as Rin, Archer, Shirou, Saber, and Ilya.
Even then, the only real character development (if you know the plot spoilers from the game....) are Archer, Rin and the Shirou/Saber pairing.

Relatively, it is a rather short series. Only 24 episodes if I remember correctly. And most of it is fighting. Plus, there are LOTS of characters. They all need screen time, which cuts down on the amount of char development time available.

Spoilers Though in the Anime they don't show this

Ilya is Shiro's mid-sister Ilya is a homonculus and Archer is Shiro in the future cuz once he wins the holy grail he is granted the wish to save thousands of lives and in return he has to become a servant of the Earth, Archer desires to return to the 5th Holy Grail War so he can kill his past self so he doesn't see the fact that it's futile to save all humans without killing others as Archer now as a servant understands what his father told him when you save someones life you can't save other people, He kills tens to save thousands and kill thousands to save millions. But at the end he doesn't kill Shiro cuz they are so distanced that it doesn't seem they are the same person. It wouldn't change anything if he kills Shiro.

reply

Yeah that clears some things up. I was wondering why Ilya was calling Shirou brother

reply

That's actually a bit of Japanese culture that isn't easily translated. The word she uses for brother is also a typical address for a young adult male. Translating it directly to 'brother' both causes confusion and takes away the intended ambiguity -- at that time only she knew that he was her brother, but she wasn't trying to directly reveal that to him.

Also, Archer was trying to create a time-paradox that would prevent him from contracting to become a Counter-Guardian, since he felt he got horribly ripped off in the deal. In the end he felt Shirou had developed differently enough not to make that contract, but the paradox failed to negate his own contract anyway so trying to kill him in the first place was pointless.
