not the best ending ... SPOILERS

I have read some comments on Fate/Stay Night fansites and it seems the ending is much more obvious to people that have played the Fate/Stay Night game or are just looking for typical Japanese sad endings. I don’t know much about the game and such sentimental ending is not really what I like unless it makes perfect sense. In this case I have some doubts.
Shiro never giving up, constantly risking his life, fighting to the end and hoping that maybe, just maybe he could be with Sabre and then ... just giving up on her? Of course in the name of love he simply must let her go so she can do what? Sabre also wants to make things right but accepts her past life and just returns to medieval times to fell asleep/die?
Since we know the legend about King Arthur (I mean the part with Bedivere throwing the sword into lake) whats the point of going back or allowing someone to go back since we know what already happened in the past? Shiro talked so much about accepting the past and not trying to change it, about how he needs the grail to keep Saber by him and then finally ending with "bye, bye Sabre I will always remember you"?. Gilgamesh survived in our times (in not very elegant way but he survived), the holy grail gives new possibilities etc. why not to try something?
At the very end he talks about remembering Saber and achieving every goal if you really want to (or something like that)...
On the other hand Rin survives what seems to be very optimistic scenario (after serious wound, giving last advices to Shiro and falling asleep I was pretty sure not to see her again).

I am aware that there are things that are not in anime only in Fate/Stay Night game (things like true identity of Sabre etc. that can be quite important) ... but still the ending is rather confusing for me.

Sorry for errors, english is not my native language :)

it's been a while since i've seen the show but i remember that within the last couple episodes shiro realized that it just wouldn't be possible to have everything and as hard as it was for him (as it was for sabre) that he would have to accept it. And the reason Sabre went back to her own time was to set things right, and to relieve her past duty as King Arthur. It would've been great to see em together, but that was part of the tragedy. plus she had been mortally wounded by mordred when she went back to her world (don't remember if mordred was in the anime) so that's why she had to die.

still i know, it wasn't the BEST ending. but it was still pretty good and a satisfying end to such an epic show.

I seem to disagree, I loved the ending. It just felt like a nice, happy ending and like everyone was at peace with the way things turned out. I absolutely loved the flashback to when King Arthur dies with Bedivere by his side, it was really powerful. Loved the music, loved the setting, just everything about it was perfect. I for one still cry whenever I hear the music and remember it. I'm kinda sick of all these happy "people get together and live happily ever after" type endings. This felt amazing to me.

Sorry. I know this is childish but...Made you look :P

okay, this show had nothing besides, saber, some music and ending.
it could have been really special, but failed. meaning, why the frack did they have to make its story like a game? they could have gone with the medieval commander (as saber) after a crushing defeat or something, aimlessly roaming the land, finds some guy to protect, falls in love, kills guy's enemy then returns to her enemies leaving him behind and eventually dieing the same way.

i hope this show will be remade this way.

So, Saber was a dude?

The anime was actually the first third of a cycle of stories, each showing a deeper character development, and this was a fitting ending for this part. In this story, Shirou couldn't give up his ideal of saving everyone no matter what, and Saber took this to its conclusion by sticking to her plan to save all the people of Britain. Shirou also never learned to value himself, so losing her was a sacrifice he accepted to maintain his ideal. The Realtu Nua version kind of cops out on this by tacking on an ending in which they're reunited in a puffy-cloud paradise, but it's so mismatched from the story that it looks like a childish daydream.

Trust me, this is one of the least tragic endings in the game, which has a few that hit like a punch in the gut.

I like this set of posts.

I too agree that the ending was almost too sad. In my eyes, it will forever taint the series, just enough that it will be quite a long time before I decide to ever watch it all again. It did, in a way, make sense. I understand that the chance of Sabre and Shiro getting together was a bit far-fetched, but why not end the series with the unexpected? It is hard for me to understand Sabre wanted her death more than a life with Shiro. So, by destroying the grail, now there cannot be any more grail wars?

The series left me with a depressing feeling, only because it was so good. The characters, story, art, everything just pulled me in so well. Yet, I am a sucker for happy endings, even an ending with promise to be happy, and was sourly disappointed with how it turned out. I've seen a lot of anime series, and a lot of them ended sadly. Why? This would have been one of my favorite animes if they would have left you with some sort of potential the two would have worked something out.

Too bad... so sad...

Yeh i definetely thought the ending was too depressing. I would've liked for them to be together in the end. I dont know if i wanna watch it again.. not that it wasnt a good story.. just kinda depressing.

Ji-hyun Jun is so pretty :D

Then you'll probably like Unlimited Blade Works better; it had the best endings in the game. But the Heaven's Feel arc will probably never get an anime, even though the ending is arguably more positive than than Fate, the story leading up to it is so out-and-out utsuge, it's emotionally exhausting just to watch.
