For me the main problem religion places upon society is the beleif in a single God. Christianity and Islamic religions are both Monotheistic, each beleive in their own 'jealous' God.
No God but God.
And while that continues to be the message of each faith, science and opposing religions will always be in conflict.
I'm a very strong atheist, yet I accept a religious point of view from someone else. I don't think I can disprove them, but at the same time am quite assured that they cannot prove their God is real.
I'd take it a step further and implicate dogma in all its forms. No system can ever be the one true way to enlightenment, be it religious, secular, economic or political. And yet people fall in line with all manner of systems of belief that try to claim just that. If good things happen to you, it must be your belief that is responsible. If bad things happen, well, that's just your own damn fault. Personal responsibility is always defered when good things happen to believers. Any thing bad is always your own fault because the belief system can't possibly be allowed to be seen as flawed!
If anything there needs to be concerted attack on tribalism, territoriality and fantacism.
