If I ever meet Dawkins I'll say this to him:

For those who believe in God, no explanation is necessary.
For those who do not believe in God, no explanation is possible.

That is the part of the opening from the film, The Song of Bernadette, about the visionary of Lourdes

Yes, ok. But what do those words actually mean? Seems like meaningless sloganeering.

reply

See, that sounds like wisdom, but it doesn't actually mean anything useful. It's hollow rhetoric.
It may as well say:
'Some people believe in things with no supporting evidence; others don't, and are bemused by those that do'
Or how about:
'For those who believe in God, no explanation is necessary, due to the nature of their religious indoctrination.
For those who do not believe in God, no explanation will convince the believers otherwise.'

My thumbs have gone weird.

Mr. Dawkins does come across as being somewhat confrontational in his approach to religious people. There again, religious people do ask for it. Don't most / all / many Christians, even today, regard it as their mission to convert non-Christians to Christianity? Those unpleasant individuals who stand with a microphone in public places and yell at passersby that unless they accept Jesus Christ as their saviour or something like it, they'll be condemned to an eternity in Hell. Isn't such behaviour confrontational? Confrontational people surely ask for a confrontational response.

If I ever meet Richard Dawkins, I'll ask him if I might shake his hand.
