what was the point?

what on earth was this movie about? I know what happened, but I certainly don't know what the point of it was. I kept thinking that someone was going to help someone in a profound way, but it was just a waste of time, as far as I can see.

The boys acting was good, always ready to watch a film set in Ireland, but it's nice when there's a point to it.

It's just a sad story. You can imagine a point of view if you need it ;)

yeah the accent certainly made it difficult. think i missed 1/4 of the dialogs because of it. i got the sense of sadness, but there really wasn't a point to the movie otherwise..

you can get it from deepdiscount.com free shipping and no tax

the point is the change in the situation in the six counties (The Good Friday agreement), how it impacts friendships, how people who've been inside have difficulty dealing with the new reality upon their release, how bridges can be built and crossed but how you have to be open to new ideas and challenge your old perspectives, like the Unionist who found Jesus...sadly not Shane Brolly's character.

My 2 cents worth

the point can be whatever you want it to be. i mean movies like this...they means different things to different people. baisically take the main themes of the movie like, faith and changes within people and redemption and friendship and turn it into whatever philosophical meaning that makes sense to you.

It was a Parable and the meaning I got was that sometimes a heart must break in order to be healed.
Seamus went looking for God so he could gain a miracle. The miracle that happened was for James who wanted nothing to do with God because his heart was "wormy" from watching his dad be murdered but in the end found God when his heart broke open (the flock of geese was the Spirit of God appearing) . Interesting because they actually have the same name James/Seamus. One went looking for God and the other found Him.

Thanks purblueple. Your comment helps. Like others here I need help having the message lifted out of the sadness of this film and made more obvious. I decided early in watching the film to embrace the strong feeling of sadness from Seamus's situation and to be sustained by his perseverance when doctors abandoned him to fate. Seamus's motivation seemed to be making the best of his imminent demise by being right in the eyes of God. I don't quite follow how finding God before he found Seamus was supposed to help. Did Seamus really expect Jesus to heal him or did he want something else? I feel some understanding and sympathy towards all three main characters. Unfortunately, the religious symbolism, which seems to be woven throughout the film, is indecipherable to me.
