Why SO black?

I am just wondering why House of Payne, and at that most all other movies and tv shows starring a predominately black cast, focus so much on being black. Almost every joke has something to do with being black, like thats all they care about. And its not just movies and tv, why do "all" black people talk about their race so much. You never hear white people saying how proud they are to be white, because we don't care, its not on our minds, but most black people walk around with race on their minds all day. Espeacially with this election all I hear from black people is the first black pres the first black pres, who cares, why is that still important. Its because black people will never shut up about race is why racism will never end. If black people would stop seperating themselves from the rest of society, we all could truley be equals.

reply

No sweetie, it's the other way around. It's because of racism (which will never end) that black people always talk about race. Also a little something called having pride in something (in this case being black).
If it annoys you so much stick your fingers in your earholes.

reply

false. why would you be proud to be black. I am not proud to be white. thats just the way we were born. I have lived in the south all of my life where everything is supposed to be "racist" but the only thing I ever hear about race is when black people talk about being black. And these stupid shows like H.O.P. just propagate racism by purposely seperating itself as a black sitcom. If that would stop then eventually nobody would pay any attention to race.

reply

right.

reply

That is only a few episodes. They don't always talk about their race on the show. And there's nothing wrong with being black and proud. Wheather we are just born that way or not there's nothing wrong with accepting your race. In all my life i've heard white power yelled out so many times you couldn't imagine. We're just proud to be who we are just like any other race.

reply

the only time i've ever heard "white power" is on tv when black dudes are making fun of white dudes, like on the Chappelle Show or like on or something. White people don't run around the street yelling white power! or white pride!, because that would be concidered racist even by me, but black people always go around yelling black pride and black is beautiful and all that, seperating themselves from the rest of society. For example, black people have their own tv channels i.e. BET, their own magaizines i.e. Jet and Ebony. No other race seperates themselves from society like black people, and then they run around and call everybody else racist. If black people want to stop being treated differently then they should join the rest of society. I honestly believe the only racism left in this country is from old people, who you can't change, and black people. And of course I'm not talking about all black people or maybe not even the majority but a good percentage.

reply

First of all, there's no way that blacks could separate themselves from anyone else in this society. Whites pretty much run everything (despite having a black president now). Have you ever heard of whites selling their homes when blacks move in? Or moving into the inner cities and practically forcing blacks out of the neighborhood?
Or how about elite societies, country clubs, and other areas that pretty much exclusively visited by whites. Blacks don't have the power, period. So they can assert their black pride all they want to. They've earned at least that. I think you should take a sociology class or something. You're only looking at a superficial view of this issue. Taking a course or two could enhance your critical thinking skills, OP. This really isn't that difficult to figure out.

reply

First, sociology is a class people take to make an easy A, not a life altering experience. Secondly, I have never in my life heard of anybody moving out because a black family moved in and at the country club I worked for we had plenty of black families as members who were well respected and got along great with everybody. These are just stereotypes that people use to say that racism is still alive, when honestly white people, for the most part, have no racist feelings towards black people and are much more color-blind then black people. So your comments are completely stereotypical and hold absolutely no water. In conclusion, Black culture, as a generalization and definately not all black people, is the only race that sees race over everything else.

reply

"honestly white people, for the most part, have no racist feelings towards black people and are much more color-blind then black people. "

LOL You cannot be serious! So I guess these skinheads I saw last week running around with the confederate flag on their car with a bumper sticker that read, "Pure Anglo-Saxon" have a $h!tload of black and Jewish friends, huh? How can you speak so bodly about things that you know nothing about? You said it all with one statement: "I have never in my life heard of..." which is a classic. Just because you haven't heard of it doesn't mean it doesn't exist or it doesn't happen. As a child, I've played with friends of mine who are white in their neighborhoods growing up, and usually there were no problems. A few times, I had people yelling at me to get off their street. Those types of things stick with you. I don't have a chip on my shoulder, and I don't hold a grudge about it, but you can't forget that it happens, and to do so would be ignorant. I'm blessed to be surrounded by friends of all races who don't see the world in such a limited view as yourself.

How can you say white people are much more colorblind than black people? Are you black? I know I couldn't make that call because I'm not white. Plus, I'm a person, so I can't speak for all black people just like you can't speak for all whites. Have you ever told someone to smile, or cheer up, only to have them look at you like you're crazy? Its because you can't tell anyone how they should feel or what they should think because you don't what they've been through.

The point is, there are things we, as black people go through that some people just can't understand. The same goes for latinos, and asians, etc. They go through things that we can't understand. I appreciate your opinion, and I don't feel that you're not a bigot. You're just really uninformed and you obviously have never spent a significant amount of time around anyone who isn't like you. It wouldn't hurt you to take another spin in that sociology class.

First of all, I took a sociology class, and no, it wasn't an easy damn A, you had to bust your a$$ in that class to get a good grade, just like any other class that requires you to work AND to think, period. I had to do a 10-page report on a certain area in Asia, and hell no, it wasn't easy. If that's all you got out of it was an easy A,you obviously were too damn lazy to learn something/didn't bother to learn a damn thing, or you had a lousy teacher. Also it was one of the best classes I've ever had since I've always been fascinated by society and how it forms people's attitudes and opinions about one another,as well as what goes on another societies, which is just as interesting/fascinating.

To make a long story short, white people were racist as hell against black folks since the day we were bought here in chains to be cheap labor for white plantation owners who made us their damn slaves, told to hate ourselves, got treated lower than dirt, constantly told that we weren't worth s*** all the damn time, told that we weren't even *beep* human and treated just like animals. And that was only for the FIRST three hundred years we were here. Honestly, I am tired to having to tell white folks like you this history all the time because you act as if black people just all of a sudden just woke the hell up one damn day and just decided all of a sudden out of nowhere to hate white people for NO reason, which is some total and complete bull****.

Read some African-American history and you'll understand why black people have major issues with white people. Hell, it was because white folks could not only be racist as hell as they wanted too toward black people, it's also because they had a whole power structure and laws on the books backing them up,which gave them free rein to terrorize, lynch and kill black folks whenever the hell they wanted. Mind, you this was going on up until barely 50 years ago in the South, so do some research because you come up in here spouting off all that BS which shows you don't know what the hell you're talking about, which figures. So be quiet and go read, and LEARN something for a change and become more educated.

reply

I'm so sick of people playing the race card.

For example, black people have their own tv channels i.e. BET, their own magaizines i.e. Jet and Ebony

shspg5, haven't you ever heard of Telemundo? Its television for the Spanish community. And there ARE magazimes for other minorites, but they aren't as well known because the main races are black and white, so that is mainly what you hear about.

but black people always go around yelling black pride and black is beautiful and all that, seperating themselves from the rest of society.

What if the main minority was women? What about all the feminists out there? Do you mean to say that if there was an all or mostly female cast, it could be considered sexist? You're explanaions fall short. Blacks do not "separate" themselves from the rest of the community because they are racist. Saying "Black Power" and showing that Blacks can have power too are two completely different things. The reason that there is BET and magazines like Jet and Ebony is partially because of Black pride, and partially of the limited number of Blacks on the small screen.

Of course, there are Blacks who are racist. But there are also Whites. And Asians. And Hispanics and Latinos.

Saying Black is Beautiful is how blacks show their pride, the same way American's show their pride on Independence Day, saying the Pledge of Allegiance, and even singing the song "Proud to be an American."

And yes, there are certain Black individuals who make the rest of the Black Community look bad, but you can't just a book by its cover.

What I'm saying is that we don't separate ourselves from society. Society already does a good job of doing it.

Yeah...black people have their own magazines, like Ebony and Jet, because WHITE MAGAZINES such as Cosmopolitan and Seventeen didn't think we were pretty enough to grace the cover many years ago. So we created our own! Why can't you understand that? Everything you're squawking about was born out of rejection. That's the same as you being hungry, and I don't feed you. What will you do? Starve or find a way to get your own food. That's what blacks did. We made our own stuff rather than begging and pleading for respect and equlity from your people. Now that years have passed and things have changed, they're not going to just throw them away. They stuck. Thanks to your ancestors. You're trying to absolve your people from having played a part in race dividing, but sweetie, it just can't be done.

Hell, why can't the poster and everyone who is siding with the idiot, realize that some things are just a part of one's culture! It's embedded in our (blacks) culture to be God fearing...be Baptist...be proud to be black, along with other things that are popular in the black race. Just like whites are notorious for things like bungy jumping or jet skiing. I don't know too many blacks who spend their weekends camped out in the woods, but I know some whites who do. I have a white friend whom I spent 5 days in New York with, and she couldn't understand why she never saw me wash my hair, while she washed hers everyday in the shower. That's because we black women do not need to wash our hair daily. It's damaging to our hair, where as not washing it daily is damaging to whites. I've said all of that to say this...there are just some things that we do as a part of our culture. Me saying, "I'm black and proud," is not intended to be racist. It's a statement that started years ago when whites made it clear that if you're black, you're nothing. My ancestors turned that into, "be black and proud." The phrase stuck. Don't like it? Too bad...blame your ancestors.

There are groups of white people who trumpet their heritage, Italian, Irish, German, French, etc., so it's inaccurate to say white people aren't proud of their heritage sometimes. What is wrong with celebrating your heritage? As long as you aren't discriminating or spewing hatred against other races, there's no harm in it. And, FYI, white people are not free of racial hangups, there are plenty out there who base everything on it.

reply

[deleted]

You are confusing race and heritage, they are not at all the same thing.

I have friends who are proud of being Rwandan, Congolese, and Jamaican. They don't strut around saying they are proud of being black.

Ho Ho Ho!

reply

Yes, you may have friends from Rwanda, Jamaica and the Congos, but with black Americans, or should I more accurately state, that those descendants of African slaves do not get the privilege of taht same history as your friends. Most black in Americans that are not descended directly from immigrants do not have that history to relate to so we have decided to create our own. Most white Americans can go back into their family lineage and say, "Oh, I'm Polish, Dutch, German French and my mother is Chinese, Italian, Russian". We do not have that same opportunity, that was stripped away when our ancestors were slaves. And I'm not saying this for the whole, my great great great grandmother was a slave, feel bad for me, it is just fact. Most of us do not know where we came from, which tribe or area of Africa and instead of denying ourselves a heritage we created one, so please do not come on here spewing that idiocy about Black Pride. Puerto Ricans, Italians, Irish, Japanese, Chinese, Russians and Germans have their days, parades, identities, languages, customs and PRIDE. SO why come on this board getting made and spewing non-sense?

You just sound ignorant. I'm pretty sure that most of the people on this board, whites, Asians and Hispanics can name what ethnicity, nationality and culture they came from or are descended from. Blacks that are descended from slaves, do not have that privelege. Africa is no longer our home and plenty of us, has no ties there besides that knowing that a few ancestors came from there hundreds of years ago. We have no identity there. Saying you have white pride is something completely different from saying we have black pride. White pride, typically is racist because those that say it tend to have a history and race they can root themselves in, us proclaiming black pride is us staking a claim in an identity as a people. If you do not like that, then forsake you race, your heritage and then come back here and spout this non-sense.

Spanish speaking channels exist only for the people who speak Spanish, which is a service to the Spanish speaking community.

I'm relatively sure that BET exists for English speaking Blacks, it in no way is a service to the community. To me, it seems like segregation is being started all over again, by the Blacks. Just because other channels aren't interesting to you, doesn't make them exclusively for Whites, but based on your logic, if I don't like MTV, then it must be only for Blacks, or if I don't like CMT, then it must be only for Blacks.

Maybe if Blacks weren't so blatantly racist, and thought that the whole world was against them, then they wouldn't be viewed as the outcasts of society by trying to further themselves from the mainstream.

So I take it you've never heard of the CW= COLOR:white because we ALL know it geared to be for white audiences, especially in recent months. Shows with black actors never survive on that channel. Why is that? Surely it can't be that the black veiwers are dying to see a back casted show canceled when it has decent ratings. But then again can't have too many postive black people on t.v. at once can we? There is no reason The Game should have been cancelled it had that same satire as gossip girls(rich people) only shrugs dare I say a black cast. You and I both know had there been a show with more focus on the white casts struggles it would still be on.

Now watch this new Melrose Place crap get the same or worse ratings and stay on a dangling string of boredom for 7 years.

Btw stations are creating to suit their veiwers and because a demand or need was there. I mean I could say how could they make a network for only cartoons they are singling out kids. Just because it's called something doesn't mean you can't watch. I highly doubt Bob Johnson would be upset because white people are/were watching B.E.T. B.E.T was needed because there was no outlet for the black actors, singers, rapper, models to work just because of their skin. And yes some kids watch cartoons on days other than saturday morning.

Okay, this topic is just plain annoying. One, Sociology Class is not an easy A, it is a good class to learn about different cultures. Two, OBAMA IS MIXED! Not just black, he has some white in him. Three, African Americans have earned the right to be proud of their hertiage just like everyone else. In fact I think they have a beautiful culture. And FYI: I am White. And I think everyone has a unique culture, because no one is truly the same. And in the end, people should just love eachother, show respect for one another, but there are too many damn racist people trying to seperate the races.

Also, I watch BET, I don't mind there is a Black Entertainment Network at all. Because up until about 30 years ago, Blacks were not in television, or movie much in the leading roles. They usually had stereotypical roles like waiters, maids, servants or slaves and that's it. I say let people express themselves how they want. If black people are proud of their hertiage power to them, just as I am proud of mine. Some may voice it, but others don't. Everyone is different, just embrace the differences.

And another FYI: I have a Black Uncle, I have an Lesbian Aunt, I have a Korean Cousin. And two sister in laws who are black. So I would have to say I am pretty damn open minded.

I left with my head held high and went on about my business. I don't go around screaming white power and I don't call my friends honkies either or my black friends the "n" word. The truth is there is a double standard. I am from Atlanta, GA where there is a mix of different races and religions. I have been exposed to it all. I do like HOP & TP's other shows and movies. I also watch Gossip girl and One tree hill. I have wondered why lots of ethnic groups go overboard about heritage pride. Who cares? Oh,yeah, the "I lost my job because I'm white" excuse. Maybe you lost your job because you just weren't that damn good at it---ever consider that? Funny how white folks will better admit that--they would rather blame it on the black person who was probably better at the damn job then they were. Non-white people declare their pride in themselves because for years and years we were told that our cultures and heritages didn't mean s*** because we weren't white. THAT'S why. And I'm sure our President checks "black" because he IS black and is seen as black, whether he's part white or not.

You are clearly delusional. First, not ALL black people walk around thinking about race all day long. As for Barack Obama...he IS the first black president. Is it a lie? The U.S. Constitution refers to blacks as what?....5/8 human? WTF is that? So to have a black president in a country that has always been run by rich whites is an achievement and why shouldn't we be proud? Unless you've walked a mile in someone's shoes, I would suggest you keep your mouth shut about things in which you are clearly not knowledgeable on. Even if black people, as YOU say, shut up about race, you think the skinhead down the street will embrace us? No! Because racism DOES exist! I mean, don't act like you have never seen or heard of the good white Anglo Saxon Christian white man who hates n____s and Jews. Did you compose a speech on IMDB for them telling them to shut up about race? Of course not. Because delusional whites never see their part in the race game. You throw bricks...hide your hands...then cry foul when you're called out. What you said sounds just as stupid as me accusing ALL whites of being hick klan members, when I know that's not true. Lastly, this show has nothing to do with racism. No one, from what I saw, ever mentioned anything about getting pulled over, getting beat up, etc., because they were black. Get over yourself!
