I think he was but this is such a spoiler. oh well Season 5 sucked, I liked season 6, I don't remember season 7, and we all know why 8 was awful.

reply

I thought he was being legitimate, and it really cemented my belief that Dexter was *not* a true sociopath. A true sociopath would not have been willing to make that kind of sacrifice, he/she would have done whatever was necessary for self-preservation.

reply

He's serious. He knows killing LaGuerta isn't justified, and he knows how badly who he is has messed up Debra's head. He'd rather die than see her hut more.

reply

Spoiler in the title is not cool.

reply

Fair. But this post was last updated two months ago, so you were clearly seeking it out, and the episode aired nearly seven years ago, so... :-\

reply

I just wish that the show ended with the season 4 finale. Everything else after just sucked.

reply

I don't know; Season 5 is pretty solid outside of everything related to Luman. The big bad is actually quite effective for Season 5; Quinn's investigation into Dexter was interesting (as well as the complexity of him being suspicious of Dexter while being romantic with Deb) if only it had lead to somewhere. Season 6 was pretty terrible but it was entertaining in a dumb funny sorta way. Season 7 was pretty good and I think the best place to end the show; just pretend Deb kills dexter at that last moment and it is a perfect ending.

reply

You are right. The only thing is that with the inconsistencies of the episodes after season 4, it just seems that all of it is bad. Seasons one through four are very solid. After season 4 it is way too uneven. Season 5 is OK with me, but it does suffer from a pretty poor main storyline. Season 7 is also OK, but it is bookended by two horrible seasons. Maybe if they took the best from the final 4 seasons and condensed it into two seasons, then the show might have been considered a classic.

reply

Yes possibly; or if they would have cut out Luman totally from Season 5 and have Deb find out about Dexter in the season finale of that season; remove season 6 completely; and move season 7 to season 6 with Deb coming to Terms with Dexter and deciding what to do, let the rest play out like it did much like season 7 (minus Hannah Mckay); then either end it with her killing him instead of Leguarta or having him get discovered and have a final season 7 with him either on the run or in prison leading to his trial and execution. Or something like that.

reply

The killing of Leguarta always didn't sit right with me anyhow. The show could have ended there where Dexter got shot and not Leguarta. Deb's character lost all believability after the shooting. I see Deb so differently now whenever I rewatch the show.

reply

it never sat right with me either; it was very much out of character for Deb and I just didn't buy it that is how it would play out. But at least for me, I just close it out of my mind and feel the show ends with Deb killing Dexter in that moment. I went back and rewatched through season 5 with my wife (she lost interest in Season 6) but I was pretty satisfied with my rewatch with her; so even though the last season (well starting with Deb killing Lequarta really) was terrible, it is not that hard to put it out of my mind.

reply

I suppose you just have to erase certain things from your memory when rewatching. I liked the character Deb so much, and I am not sure how the writers thought it was a good idea to have Deb kill Laguerta. It's definitely one of the most egregious decisions made in the history of television. Also, because of that I also couldn't accept how they killed off Deb in the end and expected us all to mourn her death. Even after all these years I feel an anger for the writers decisions during the last season. They really brought the show down quite a few pegs overall with their inconsistencies as far as character and plot go. Finally, I don't think that Dexter would have chosen to abandon Harrison and let Hannah take care of him. That was just completely ridiculous.

reply

Yes, I agree it was character assassination what they did to Deb that last season. And then she was like helping Dexter kill people? just so bad. And then to make it worse they kill her off in the last episode in such a stupid and unceremonious way. Then with Dexter, his little pathetic puppy love with Hannah (a killer herself) is enough for him to be 'cured' of his psychopathy? come on, then he leaves his son with her and she is just like okay with being the adopted mom of her serial killer boyfriend's son? The second they started making Dexter fall in love with characters (first Luman then Hannah) the character was not even a shadow of his former self. It is like a bunch of Twilight lover writers got in there and started to romanticize the shit out of a sadistic Serial Killer. God it some of the last seasons' inconsistent writing was painful to get through.

Well consider Dexter drops the knife. He has now given up but Leguarta is still trying to get Deb to shoot Dexter. It really shows just how far Leguarta has gone over to the side of vigilante. She is just as bad as the criminal the cops are supposed to be catching at that point. It was already clear that Leguarta was doing all she could to get the murder of Dexter's mom out of prison which was going to lead to what? At some point he was going to be killing people again, but she didn't care about that... Leguarta became a corrupt cop that needed to be stopped more so than Dexter. At least with Dexter he was chasing after bad guys and doing all he could to keep them from hurt any innocent people... Leguarta who was sworn to protect and serve was doing the opposite. She had to be put down because imagine if she hadn't been... she was on a rocket to the top in terms of power and that power in the hands of a vigilante nut job like her would have led to bad things.

Frankly, while season 8 ended like shit, I can't say it was all bad... there were good parts and bad parts in every season... the only real problem was they way they ended season 8... at the very least they should have left it ambiguous as to whether Dexter lived or died.
