I still get pissed off every time I think of the finale.

The whole final season really. Never has a show destroyed such quality build up and character development in such an epic way.

The failure of the writers cannot be topped.

Just needed to post that. Pissed since finale night.

Ooo do you mind telling me the book ending? I know a few things that are in the book that weren't in the show, which I'm thankful for because it sounded awful. But yes I also thought this Finale was not good

For the books:
It takes place about a month after Dexter's Final Cut, an awful excuse of a book that was random sex scenes for the sake of it. Dexter actually feels something for another human too, a rather out of character situation even with the attempts at humanising him in Dexter is Delicious. When the woman he's cheating on Rita with is murdered as well as his wife, Dexter takes the fall for it. The irony wasn't lost on me, but the writing was bad enough I was surprised he would be charged with the murders.

This horrible writing carries on into Dexter is Dead, the final book in the series. You probably know that in the books, Brian isn't killed in the first book. He returns in this one with a powerful lawyer to spring out Dexter from jail, and Brian explains that his skills have allowed him to thrive in the drug trade. Back to that shortly. Deborah tries to make Dexter give up custody of his kids to her, and in the end she decides to let him keep his kids. I'd like to say there was more to it than that, but there's very little time devoted to this, and it would have been better to flesh this out.

Through a series of other bumbling events (Brian's ignorance that credit cards can be hacked, two gang members killing each other trying to kill Brian,) people try to kill Dexter and Brian, and it's discovered that their lawyer is the one who's decided to sell them out to gang members. It's a fairly obvious twist, but it's not made very clear why he does this. It's suggested he was offered more money, but it's a glossed over theory. As well as this, Dexter's kids are kidnapped by this gang, and Dexter comes clean with Deborah about how Brian is still alive, and they intend on hatching a plan to get their kids back. Brian and Dexter torture a guy for information and learn of a yacht where they're being held. They storm the yacht, Deborah gets away with the kids and Brian and Dexter die.

Ignoring the rather bad writing, here's a list of plots that are never revisited:
Doakes - He's something of a cyborg by the 3rd book, but he was hunting Dexter right up until Double Dexter.
Chutsky - Deborah's boyfriend, and father to her son. Never seen again after Dexter is Delicious.
No followup, afterstory or anything. Sure, it's told from a first person perspective, but it literally ends at Dexter's death. There's no further characterisation of anyone else in the series, most of whom are still 1 dimensional even after 8 books.

WOW.. That sounds like a mess... I really don't know what to say lol. I will say though that a part of me felt the show series should have ended with him dead because him living on while Harrison is with that Thing just leaves too many questions for me. Also I feel like he would have to kill again. His need will never stop IMO. I know that he stops himself at one point in the end but maybe I am forgetting something but I always thought that Dark Passenger will and always be there.

I would've been fine with the finale if Dexter could've just moved to Argentina and everything else at Miami Metro stayed the same, to me that would've been more of an unconventional ending. I mean, Dexter wasn't a typical good guy or bad guy, and the message I received in regards to the ending is that he has to pay some sort of penance. Why? Sometimes the bad guys (even when they're the good guys) win, I just think that would've been more realistic of an ending, considering the show's premise for 8 seasons. I just would've preferred a qualified win.

How do you think it should have ended?

I just finished watching the series for the 3rd time and I disagree.

Perfect ending in my book.

There is no way they could please the fans. I've seen every possible "wish ending" on this board so anything they did would piss off most of the fan base. Some wanted Dexter dead, some wanted him to go to prison, some wanted him to go to Argentina.

I would lean closer to the latter. I would have been incredibly angry if they killed Dex or sent him to prison. I doubt I would have ever watched the series again.

That ending allows everyone to write their own ending and I love movies that do that. If you feel Dexter "has to pay" then you can just imagine him being miserable the rest of his life. If you wanted him to be happy you can imagine he eventually goes to join Hanna and Harrison. Or maybe you would imagine him starting a whole new serial killer life as a lumberjack.

I'm very happy with the ending.

You've not seen very many TV shows, have you?

Good job trying to fit in with the general public with no real opinion, though.
