The ending?

Have the writers chimed in with intent of the ending? I feel it is left ambiguous due to Dexter's history of change as well as how they tried to hint at suicide to the audience which I didn't believe only to immediately reveal he didn't do it. Are we to believe that Hannah is to believe that Dexter simply just rode his boat off into a hurricane only to disappear just like his victims?
