ALLEN AND GANT

I thought Chad Allen and Robert Gant could have had supporting roles. If their production company produced the movie; and since both actors have had success with the Donald Strachey Mystery series and Queer as Folk repectively, then Allen and Gant could have allowed 2 other actors to play the leads. And why continue to play gay roles? I understand they are both out, but try to be a versatile actor. Produce a straight role for yourself then.

The film tried to do its thing and it was ok.

Why should they (Robert Gant and Chad Allen) have let other actors play the lead roles? One of the reasons for starting Mythgarden, (production company) was to produce gay themed projects/films. I also noticed that you didn't say that someone other than actress Judith Light, should have played the straight role of Gayle? Do you think a lesbian actress should have played the (lead) female role as well? I'm only asking because I noticed that you only posted this particular comment to the "Save Me," Robert Gant, and Chad Allen, message boards.

As for continuing to play gay roles, why not? Would you tell, Jake Gyllenhaal, or for that matter any other 'straight' actor that they should continue only playing straight roles?

Also, actor Robert Gant has recently finished filming a made for TV movie called, "Special Delivery," in which he plays the (straight) ex-husband of character Maxine Carter, (played by Lisa Edelstein). He played a straight role in the television series, Nip/Tuck and he is currently in the UK, filming his new series, "PA's," in which he plays a straight role.

I'm sure in the future both actors will choose the roles that they would like to play. Whether those roles are gay or straight, really doesn't and shouldn't matter.

It's hard for openly gay actors to find work. The material is good and the characters are interesting, it would be silly to pass the chance on playing them.

The film tried to do its thing and it was ok. Well that's one opinion.

Maybe I missed the movie you saw but the movie I saw was frigging brilliant. All the acting was superb and the story was great.

And why would they feel the need to produce a straight role for themselves? If they can make gay roles like this stand out why would they want a straight role?
And I had to come on here to find out they were gay. I had a crush on Chad Allen when I was a kid, and now I have a crush on Robert Gant. Still have a bigger one on Stephen Lang, but that's not really the point here.

I think the misperception here is that anyone lacks versatility by playing only one orientation. The OP says they should "try to be versatile" and "produce a straight role for yourself." I don't see the OP saying that straight actors who only play straight characters lack versatility. And presumably that's because he/she recognizes that there are many different types of characters within the heterosexual spectrum. Well guess what? There are many different types of characters within the homosexual spectrum too.

These specific characters were different from any other that I've seen Allen and Gant play. Yes they were gay. And they were also particular individuals in a particular story about particular themes. As has been pointed out, Gant has played straight roles and they are different from his character in Save Me. As are the gay roles that he has played. Same with Allen. His Donald Strachey character is gay but nothing like the character here. And he has played straight roles that were different not just because they were straight but because they were different kinds of individuals going through different things according to the story that they were a part of.

When we stop seeing straight people as varied and unique and with distinct personalities and gay people as all the same personality, it will be easier to see the ways in which the characters in this film and many others are distinct and unique in their own right. And with luck, we'll all begin to see that in our fellow human beings in real life as well.

I liked this film, but to me, the weakest part was the "connection" between Chad Allen and Robert Gant. They had zero chemistry and I did not buy them as a couple.
