ran to fast

I get so sick and tired of the animals having superspeed. They did it in every shark movie except for Jaws and in Anaconda now this movie. A crocodile cant move fast on land there legs are to short and there body is to heavy. Everyone can look at a croc and see that it cant move very fast on land. There would be no way one can catch a man on land. I thought that wrecked the movie I wish they would just make a movie with real life animal facts. Cause a croc is probably the slowest land animal there is and in this movie it can run 10 mph.

reply

That's wrong. We went to alligator adventure and they said crocs and alligators can move very fast on land and to never try and outrun it.

reply

I disagree with that I was looking on the internet and found this. MYTH It is often said that you can outwit a crocodile by running in a zig-zag fashion away from it. This isn't true! Humans can out run crocodiles on land, and a straight line is the fastest way of putting distance between yourself and the crocodile. Most crocodile attack victims never see the crocodile coming - they use surprise, not speed.
All I am saying is that Crocodile chased Steven for miles. Some species can move fast on land but the african crocodile cant sustain that
more proof-run away in a straight line. Crocs and alligators will outrun you for about thirty foot [10m] or so [up to 20mph] after which they will need a bit of a lie down. They will outswim you all day long.
There would be no way that Croc could move like that on land they dont even hunt on land when they do run its to get away out of fear not to hunt.

All I want is a movie with real life Crocs stats and realistic behavior

reply

FFS, the movie was about the genocide in Sudan, not the crocodile. The croc played a bit role, who cares how fast it ran. :/

Does anybody suspend belief for movies anymore? Seriously just enjoy the movie and quit nitpicking every thing.

reply

A crocodile that's decided to attack you can and will run faster than a horse for short-medium distances at once.

Trust me. I know from experience.

reply

Crocodiles top out at about the same speed as the average human being jogs. They can cover short distances (very short) a little quicker by lunging but they are not that fast overall. Crocodillians are ambush predators, in the majority of Croc attacks the victim never even saw the crocodile (or alligator) before it attacked them.

You just killed my girlfriend.....thats actually....kinda pissing me off....huh....

reply

A crocodile that size would never be able to run that fast and for that long......FACT!

reply

Actually the croc in this movie is seen to be very clumsy on land, constantly tripping over itself and whatnot and the humans in the movie are seen to easilly outrun it for a little while. You have to remember that this beast was 30 feet long, it wouldn't really have to run fast as each step would be a long ass stride. Humans however, are not fast on land at all either. Even a quick person would have a hard time running 15-20mph over a long period of time. A large 30ft croc would have no problem catching up to cameraman running through tall grass.

My problem wasn't that it was too fast, but it had WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY too much endurance. Most crocs have fast, but very short bursts of speed (5 seconds worth). This one was a marathoner (30+seconds).

reply

Its just a movie.

reply

Crocs are fast for sprints, but their endurance is minimal. And though the croc itself was 30 feet long, it's legs were no more than 2 feet long each, which means it would have to take 15 steps just to clear it's own length, whereas a running adult human could make the same distance in three steps. There's no way an animal that size could maintain that sort of speed; after the loss of it's initial momentum out of the water, it's body weight would be constantly slowing it down. After getting stuck in that tree, there's no way it could have rebuilt that level of momentum, so as to catch up with a person who had essentially escaped. The croc would have tired out long before Steven did.

reply

Actually for short distances a adult fully grown male crocodile can run at around 20-25mph for a short distance
now since he was on flat land, and hadnt ran much and humans that arnt olympic runers run at about 15mph it wouldnt take long for Gustav to catch up

so ya its possible
and yes its gay Steve was coolest dude IN the movie

even cooler Gustav is real ^_^ lol RAWR RAWR killed 120-200 people =P

reply

Ummmm, no. It couldn't. The guy had about a 200-300 yard lead on it. Even a croc that big could only burst for 70-80 yards before having to rest. 15 footers can go about 40 yards on a good day.

reply

I'll just put my 2 cents in
I wrk at a crocodile park and even though crocodiles have short legs they can indeed move pretty fast, I sometimes find it hard to grab the bab crocs. A big croc can run as fast as a baby for about 4 - 5 metres and then must stop. But if you are not ready in that first 4 - 5 metres then it could very well get you.

If You Disagree Then You Have Allodoxaphobia or Kakorrhaphiophobia

Yes I agree that it ran too fast but what ever happened to suspension of disbelief? I saw my first porosus when i was 4 and have loved them more than anything else ever since and I am now 34 and even a fact lover like myself can relax and realise that its only a movie, whose job is to entertain. If you want factual depiction, watch a documentary. However, there is some info below on galloping below. Obviously I agree that a niloticus of this size would rarely be able to gallop, but the quote below is for the poster that said that they can only slide on thier bellies.

"Croc gallopping is quite unique, with front & hind limbs moving as synchronous pairs. As a result, the croc bounds almost like a rabbit - hind legs moving together to push the animal forwards & into the air & then the body bending so the front legs absorb the impact, while the hind legs move forward for the next bound. This style of running has been seen in a several species (Australian freshwater crocodile, New Guinea crocodile, Nile crocodile, American crocodile, Cuban crocodile, African dwarf crocodile) although it is more common in smaller individuals of these species. However, a few boisterous individuals (eg. Cuban crocodiles, Australian freshwater crocodiles) have been known to attack a threat by galloping towards it - quite an intimidating experience!

Most crocodiles can achieve speeds of around 12 to 14 kph for short periods, which is somewhat slower than a fit human can run. Even faster are galloping crocodiles, and Australian freshwater crocodiles have been clocked at just over 17 kph over distances of perhaps 20 to 30 metres before they begin to tire."

Finally, I want to address the people who say that it could never have caught Steve. Sure, if the pursuit continued the same as we saw it after the end of the scene, sure, it probably couldnt have caught him. But we didnt see it catch him, did we? We didnt see if he tripped in the reeds, did we? No, we didnt, and because we didnt, we cannot conclusively say that he could not have been caught by Gustave. This movie certainly wasnt flawless, but it wasnt as bad as the common opinion is either. As a huge lifelong croc lover, frankly, i was thrilled just to see another croc movie. As simple as that. For a true crocodilian lover, thats all that is needed...

"Innocent? Is that supposed to be funny?"

reply

You wanna see a realistic croc movie see ROGUE!!!

reply

Rogue's probably the best croc movie ever made, no doubt about it.

"Innocent? Is that supposed to be funny?"

reply

Could not agree more!It was very realistic in the way the croc attacks and no one sees it happen!

reply

Yeah, Gustave moved WAY too damn fast. He's slow for a croc, 'cause he's so damn big. It's part of why he eats people so often, he's to slow to catch his usual prey. 'Course now he's strong enough to kill a bull hippo, but he jumped on top of that cage in the movie....wtf?!

I can only suspend my believe so much. I was thoroughly enjoying the movie up to that point. They really over did it.

There's no reason trying to justify it.

reply

I can't even believe I'm on this thread. Alligators and crocodiles scare me so much I won't even go to Florida to watch my favorite football team play. I know it's stupid but I really have seen nothing reassuring me that I won't be eaten in some hotel bathtub there. Plus they grin, and I don't want to be eaten by anything that grins at me. I couldn't swim anywhere there. And if it's not them it's bull sharks.

How can anyone live in Florida, the Amazon, Australia...any of these places where most of the animals there will try to eat you? NO WAY. I can't even watch this movie again!

reply

stop contradicting the op. no matter the size, a crocodile will be no match to a human in speed, sprint or endurance.

Crocs land speed is 22 miles an hour. If you could run a 4-minute mile—which you can’t—you’re doing 15 mph.

Not surprisingly, the OP is an idiot.
