Hey.. There's a part where Alessandro Nivola (John) tells that he talked to Mary, and he knew about the situation... I just wanted to know who this Mary is!!

Good point, I was wondering the same.
As far as we (the audience) are concerned, Stanley (Cusack) doesn't talk about the death of his wife to anyone. He just packs up the kids in the car and off they go. Anyway, I can't remember him talking to anyone but his answering machine. But maybe the copy of my film is different? According to the box it is 82', on this board it says the movie is 85'. So I missed out on the mother? weird.
I would guess the mother was notified by the military, too.
Mary Kay Place was given credit in the film as "woman at the funeral", but is barely seen, and has no lines.
I don't think there are multiple versions of the film.
