the ending is a COMPLETE rip-off of Before Sunset

And the dialogue has absolutely no originality or resonance. Beautiful photography, but absolutely wretched script.

I don't a gtee with that. I thought the script was great until the last line ... the "I know" is absolutely copied from Before Sunset ( I just can't believe they just happened to have the same ending line) but other then that it was a beautiful movie.

ask the spokesperson, I don't have a brain

Loved the movie, loved "Before Sunrise/Sunset" but you have to admit, the look on Nora's face at the end is priceless :-)

Agree :)

Yes it is a complete rip-off. If it was ripping off a film from the 60s or one that was mostly a different film okay, but Before Sunset is only a few years older than this.

A pathetic ending to a mostly average film.

5/10

I don't think the whole film was a COMPLETE rip off of Before Sunrise/Sunset, but there are certainly more similarities than just the ending, like this is both story arcs combined into one film:

One of them is French.
They part and then have no way of contacting each other (once she looses the phone number).
They find each other again by accident.
Surprise meeting on a train.
Female overanalysing. (Celine - why do I have to make things so complicated all the time.)
Female lead has a reading by a fortune teller.
Obviously the ending.
Partly filmed in Paris.

Despite all this I still enjoy this film, and have actually upped my rating on subsequent vieweings. I guess I'm a sucker for this type of film where people make real connections.

Yes well, maybe I need to see it again? I'm a sucker for this type of film too. I guess I feel protective of Before Sunset cause I love it so much. I'm not as blokey as I should be! Wanna make a real connection with me? I'm not blokey but i have nice body parts. Oh god I love being silly on the internet whilst bored at work...

reply

Tell me, are you bored with your job generally or is the boredom mere interludes amongst an otherwise enjoyable workday? If the boredom dominates, then perhaps you should at least contemplate alternative employment? Life is too short and I fear regular bouts of boredom will squash your creativity and passion for life (not speaking from experience or anything...).

Re not being blokey enough: I'm from NZ, where blokes are often very blokey and sometimes a little less blokey would be a good thing, so embrace your slightly-less-blokeyness.

Re being a sucker for this type of film: I've heard Dinner with Andre is similar but I haven't seen it yet.

I thought the film was OKAY until that ending. Wow, what an awful way to end the film. This film has nothing on Before Sunset. A complete lack of originality.

reply

I came here to see if anybody else noticed this. Total rip-off.

reply

I agree!! I really liked this film and then... the ending two lines! What blatant, lazy ripoff! Especially because those two lines are such a poignant part and powerful aspect of Before Sunset, so hear them repeated, more or less, in a film made just a couple of years later, is truly, truly lame.

Ha, I came here to post exactly the same thing (I wasn't going to mention the dialogue or resonance, though).

Leading up to the end, I kept thinking "this is like Before Sunrise with a manic depressive person." Then halfway through I thought "this is like Before Sunset with a manic depressive person." I did like the fact that the film tried to include weird or funny situations throughout (the Justin Theroux character, the carrying of the parcels, etc.) but there was nothing that could possibly offset the feeling you get when you're thinking "don't end like Before Sunset, don't end like Before Sunset" and then it ends EXACTLY LIKE BEFORE SUNSET!
