Something very unconventional about this film

I am having trouble pinpointing it. A bizzarro film like Holy Motors, it is easy to identify how it is different from a "normal" movie. This one though was strange for a movie more because of...its realism, maybe? But movies like A Separation or Wendy and Lucy also have that cinema veritė quality but don't seem to "break the rules" as much as this one did in some (delightful) way. Anyone else get the same sense? Almost like "outsider art" or something...

Yes, I did, it was an unexpected surprise, and I think it's exactly what you said. With its title and the way it was packaged I expected something more quirky or along the lines of a Jason Schwartzman or Paul Rudd kind of comedy, with one of those self-indulgent Leslie Mann-type "look at me, I'm so original and offbeat and so cute when I speak my mind" kind of characters, which I've gotten very tired of. I expected it to be more movie-like and unreal, but it was just kind of normal, in a good, honest way. It treated things with the flat truth, soberly. Also it seemed free of many of the usual cliches or rom-com formulas, and it was refreshing to see people interact in such a decent way with each other, like in certain scenes between Parker Posey & Drea De Matteo, or the way the lovers didn't always end up blaming each other for everything. The only thing I felt was a bit off was the ending, because when she first arrived in Paris I said to myself, "Oh, no, please don't tell me she's going to accidentally run into him" -- because really, what are the chances of that? And then she did. But at least it left the end kind of open. I like Zoe Cassavetes and want to see more from her. By the way, the deleted scenes were really excellent and I think they would have added a lot.

Well said! I haven't seen the deleted scenes and now I wish I could...

I like your top 250 - especially when I saw things like Sugar Town and Before the Devil Knows You're Dead and My Neighbor Totoro on it 😊

A number of things on it I want to see

Sounds like you have great taste! Hardly anyone has heard of Sugar Town.

Do you have a list of your own? There's probably some gems on there I'd like to see as well.
