Just noticed this big mistake in the writing

When the professor tells Scott about Alex he acts as though he thought he was dead the entire time but later we see a flashback of Scott in the hospital right after the accident where a doctor tells him Alex is fine and living with a good family. I watched this series when it first aired but I just noticed this now that I'm marathoning it on Netflix.
