are these guys really the 'masters' of sci fi???

Harold Becker
Jonathan Frakes
Darnell Martin
Michael Petroni
Mark Rydell
Michael Tolkin

a few of them are very good directors but...NONE OF THEM ARE SCI-FI MASTERS!!!

Darnell Martin-directed T.V. episodes of E.R. and LAW AND ORDER and the T.V. film produced by Oprah, THEIR EYES WERE WATCHING GOD. Come on!!!

Michael Petroni-directed the AWFUL QUEEN OF THE DAMNED and a real snooze fest about lost love called TILL HUMAN VOICES WAKE US. Nope. Still no sci-fi master!!!

Mark Rydell-a really good director but...THE COWBOYS(john wayne cowboy film), THE RIVER(mel gibson farm film), and ON GOLDEN POND!!! Need I say more???

Michael Tolkien-great writer/director of THE RAPTURE and co-writer of DEEP COVER...he did co-write DEEP IMPACT but it is not great sci-fi. Yep. Still no master!!!

Harold Becker-once great director of films such as THE ONION FIELD(cops), TAPS(military academy), and SEA OF LOVE(cops). Very good director. but guess what? still no sci-fi master nor has he even directed a sci-fi film.

Jonathan Frakes-okay...no master but at least he comes from the world of sci-fi. He does make crappy kiddy movies now but his STAR TREK directorial efforts were good and at least allow him the right to direct a sci-fi show. HOWEVER...still not a master of sci-fi!!!

They should change the name of the show. I have no problem with directors making films from all different genres but again, change the name of the show. They are just cashing in on MASTERS OF HORROR.

The intention of this show is to focus on the authors, while MoH focused on the directors.

Yes and there are few sci-fi directors that specialise in low budget films and would work on tv...

THE ONION FIELD - was not actually a (cops) movie as you say. It would be better classified as a TRUE STORY, written by Joseph Wambaugh, a former police officer-turned writer. Yes the main characters in the story are police officers, but the story is actually about the officers that were taken out and killed (shot with their own weapons) in the Onion Fields in Central California.

I don't know any of the others as directors - though of course everyone knows Jonathan Frakes comes from Star Trek. I don't watch any of the new Star Trek spin-offs, yet I know where he comes from. Funny though, after that show, he was found hosting Urban Legends.

Robert Heinlein. I know a TON of people who say that he IS a master of Sci-Fi. I've read his books and they are just, well, stupid. All of them center around female nymphomaniacs built better than the original Barbie...sure they come from other worlds, but that is the only thing sci-fi in them. Might as well be rated as something more risque than Harliquinn Romance novels.

The series sounds like it could be a good one, so naturally they will only show it for a couple of weeks. That's all any of the networks ever do anymore.
Raines was a very sophisticated, intelligent, and imaginitive crime drama - one totally different than any that have previously aired - and, NBC could not wait to cancel the show, simply to replace it by something akin to Bingo Night that cost approximately 7.50 per episode to make.

Your Heinlein comment is funny. The guy wrote a ton of books, and you apparently only read the last five he ever wrote. Yeah, they wre kind of weird. Try the rest, like Starship Troopers, or Stranger in a Strange Land. You know, the books that the people who call him a master of sci fi usually refer to.

The funny thing is that most of his books do not involve sex, do not have a female protagonist, and involve sexual or romantic relationships only as a peripheral issue.

That's a true Heinlein fan. It's been a while - that's from The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress or The Green Hills of Earth. I say TANSTAAFL to people and then have to translate. There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch.

Um... You obviously have no idea who wrote the stories, do you?
