would someone as cunning as the lead really not have raised a few alarm bells when a stunning girl suddenly falls in love with him? I did enjoy it a lot though

Everybody has a weakness. His was that he was desperately looking for affection.
Besides, she wasn't the main person he should have been worried about. She was not connected with the big loan.
His true mistake was to trust a few people around him and especially, to fail to listen to his mother and loan an unbelievable amount of money :)
