Deadline has confirmed that author Ta-Nehisi Coates is writing a Superman reboot feature for Warner Bros and DC, which J.J. Abrams is producing under his Bad Robot label.

Hannah Minghella will serve as producer. No plot yet and no attachments despite the fact that we’ve heard how Henry Cavill is eager to get back into the cape.

dont think Cavill will be back if its a reboot, hes been superman for near enough a decade/4 films (like Reeve). more likely is it will be a black superman

Calvin Ellis could be an interesting change of pace. But I would be surprised if they followed through on that;Coates' involvement notwithstanding. The backlash would be unprecedented.

reply

Coates wrote Captain America so it may not be a race swap.

reply

A fair point.

reply

I think you'd be off your rocker thinking your gonna race swap Superman and imagine the outrage.

Could be like the former Superman & Lois writer demanding race swapping and then leaving.

Will this end up like former Flash director Rick Famuyiwa?

reply

Well, Coates seems to specialize in generating outrage so who knows how things will proceed.
I wouldn't mind it myself unless they get a bad director or the writing is bad. Assuming that the THR article is true, I heard that it may be a cynical attempt by WB to cash in on Black Panther's popularity (once again showing that they always miss the forest for the trees).
Of course, WB may change their minds and go with someone else like their other DC projects. Not sure why they have so much confusion and mismanagement over DC properties, I thought that was Hamada's job to straighten things out?

Maybe they will or won't, but if they want to have Superman portrayed as not-white, they should go Hispanic, honestly. Superman is an immigrant, and it might be kind of interesting to have him inhabit that a bit. Of course, raised in Kansas since infancy, he couldn't have an accent.

reply

Non white Superman is a publicity stir, it's like doing an all black production of Hamlet or a gay production of Romeo & Juliet or Three Women And A Baby, it really doesn't matter it's the quality that matters.

reply

I think these days it is a publicity thing, or a virtue signalling thing, or just somebody drinkin' the Kool-Aid, but I don't want to rule out the possibility of alternative castings entirely. Sometimes I think there is thought behind it, or because it just makes sense. Michael Clarke Duncan as The Kingpin, for instance. They needed a HUGE guy for that role, and one who could act. MCD was a great actor and a massive dude. So the casting makes sense.

What I am saying is that, generally or in the abstract, I think this might work. But it would require thought and a motive to tell a brilliant story. It should respect the source material, and either the change must work within the source, or they might update the script itself. West Side Story is a good example of the latter. They changed the dialogue, so it doesn't matter that they also changed the setting and the ethnicity of half the characters.

But also I see your point. And when not general or abstract, most of the time this happens, it's a stunt or an attempt to be woke. Putting that sort of thing over a plot or character is always going to weaken the film (or book or play or whatever), even if only a little bit.

reply

It should be noted this would have been an Elseworlds Story (similar to Marvel's What If) However I think it's been shelved.

reply

It's been no news about it for nearly a year, I hope for the love of fuck it has been shelved, people have low expectations with JJ involved.

Rumors on the script, the 'black superman' angle might be adapted to star Cavill https://www.supermanhomepage.com/superman-movie-script-rumors/
