I think it is more the way Snyder and DC "think" Superman and the rest of the DC characters need to be portrayed - overly serious and not able to enjoy anything other than a quick smile.

True. But I'd even go as far as Diane Nelson as well. She's the overall boss even with Geoff being attached to the film division.

She is lost with this franchise.

I think it was done on purpose, when he comes back from death in the Justice League movie he's going to have a different personality.
