I Dunno Man !

If I were to review this movie, I would be be in the "middle of the road". First the positive side: Good production values overall; you could tell it's a high budget film. Second: Cinematography was pretty good (minimal filtered lens usage) plus they filmed most of it in native Mongolia. Third; acting was alright, actors and actresses did their job as per Director Sawai ordered them. Now on the negative side (the nitty-gritty part): First some historical innacuracies eg: the reason Temujin killed his half-brother (there were some embellishments) of course I could be wrong since there were no written records of the biography of Genghis Khan, all were oral. Watch A&E's "Genghis Kahn Terror and Conquest" documentary if you want his "technical" life biography. Second was the music soundtrack! Come'on! You could tell it was a Japanese composer (with all his orchestra) trying to inject some 20th century music emotion into a 16th century era film. It was overwhelming,to the point that I have lower my volume on my amplifiers so as not to loose my mood in watching the movie. They could have used some indegineous Mongolian composer and musicians. Third; there was an overall leanings towards the "Typical Japaneses Samurai" films genre. You could tell (If you've seen Samurai Films), when Genghis Khan have meetings before a battle. Anyway this movie was good overall, but if you're a full- pledge Hollywood Film Afficionado I wouldn't reccomend this movie to you!

actually there were written biography of Genghis Khan
"The Secret History of the Mongols"
it is commissioned by the Mongolian royal family, the Genghis Khan part was finished in 1228, one year after his death.

Actually Genghis Khan killed his older brother when they were teenagers, because they were all left to die in a forest without weapons and winter clothes, and this brother ate all his kills (rabbits, and stuff) without sharing with anyone, not even with his mom, in hiding. When Genghis discovered, he killed him in rage.

But you are right: a Japanese movie about Mongols is not exactly right.

No on throws a stink when someone makes a movie about Spartans and they're not Greek. No one throws a fit when someone makes a movie about Britons and they aren't British. So why should anyone have a problem with any one making a movie about something not of their own home country? Just seems silly to me.

reply

The reason why is that culturally, English speakers feel that they are the universal culture of the world.
