Question about very first scene of first episode

I had heard about "Drive", but never saw it, until last night. What I'm wondering--besides why Fox are such buttholes--is this: Why was Alex getting patched up in that first scene? Hadn't the company guy(s) already left with his wife? Why would he have needed attention if he showed up at home and nobody else was there?
