The Bigger (Scarier) Picture

I read Jeanne Becker's blog through another post on this message board, you know, the one about how her blood was boiling? It drove me nuts. This woman is a straight up psychotic. And mind you, when I was younger, I watched her host Fashion Television regularly. I learned what is, and what isn't fashion through her. I'm 19 years old now, a lover of fashion still, but after seeing the last CNTM elimination, I just don't get her anymore. And my respect is down to ZERO. She's no hero no mo.

There's something sooo wrong with Canada's Next Top Model on a whole lotta levels. They were mean to Rebeccah because she was quirky, shy, weird and got a fierce as hell haircut. They crushed her. I know, that sort of means she wouldn't make it in the fashion world, but come on (Why is Meaghan still there.. ugh, I digress). CNTM isn't the fashion world. It's girls in a house competing to get into the minor fashion world. They shouldn't torture each other. They were mean to Maryam because she's more attractive, edgy. So, they picked on her accent, and because she was a shy, quiet Persian girl who didn't speak as much English. They even went so far as to accuse her of not being 'all there'. Jeeee-zussssss. That's so baad. It's soooo not what my country, Canada, is about. For all the young girls watching this show, it was sending a message: HIDE YOUR QUIRKINESS, HIDE WHAT MAKES YOU WHO YOU ARE, SHUT UP WHEN BULLIES SCREW WITH YOU. DON'T FIGHT BACK.

Are we to see these last three as any sort of role models? Usually, there's like one b#tch in the final three, and they don't win. Top Model isn't just about beauty, but about grace, poise, goodness and being someone a young woman like me can admire. But NOW, there are literally THREE mean, mean, bad influence girls left on the show. Mean-spirited, bully girls like, from high school!! Linsay even admitted to picking fights all the time on her rez. And you'd expect some decency from a freaking youth councilor as Linsay says she is. I'd not want to be the kid who gets sent to her for help.

Nikita says she looked 'retarded' in her Cover Girl picture, and they had just about NOTHING to say about that? Jeanne's blood didn't boil because of that. "I mean... disabled," she replied to them after Jay said, 'Did you hear what she just said, 'I look retarded'?'. She was not reprimanded except for that one tiny little moment. This should be bigger news. It's an issue in this country, all over the world. There have been PSAs in the past against saying 'retarded' to mean something isn't cool. It's the same was when someone says, 'that's so gay'. She was on MTV's After Show with Daniel and Jessie, talking crap with the other girls about Maryam, and then they asked her about the incident where she said "retarded... I mean... disabled", and she LIED. She said, I didn't mean it that way, people use retarded in a rude manner to mean something else, I wasn't thinking, and it shouldn't be done. But then why did she add 'disabled' to it, correcting herself at panel, making it worse? What a lunatic liar. Well, what do you expect from Nikita? She's a terrible, soulless human being. Oh, and then she added the typical "Some of my best friends are mentally challenged." Spare me.

There's a bigger, and scarier picture here that I feel has not been addressed. In season 2, there was a beautiful and edgy Asian girl called Sisi, remember her? I don't necessarily think she should have won, but there was something that happened on the show. Pure ignorance occurred. First of all, Sisi KNEW fashion names, and she posed like a dreamboat, that's a threat, when girls can do editorial. It frightens the other competitors at times. Another girl, Brandi (who wasn't fully white), resident bitch of the house, said something along the lines of: "She's not even from Canada. Shouldn't Canada's Next Top Model be Canadian?" Why? Because Sisi HAS AN ACCENT AND IS ASIAN, she can't represent this country? Ignorant!!!! She was and is Canadian. It was disgusting, Uncle Tom-like, horrifying to see this. And nobody addressed it. Nobody called her out for it. The girl who ended up getting 2nd place was sitting right next to her, and she didn't say anything. Isn't that wrong? Aren't there millions of different types of people in our country?

It's strange how America's Next Top Model, can go on for 12 cycles and not have as many occurrences of racism and discrimination in a ratio format that have occurred in only three seasons of Canada's Next Top Model. I never thought a reality competition about modeling could teach me about how much discrimination is going on in this country. If this is not a problem for anybody, then we DO have a problem. It's not so much about reality television, but the PEOPLE on it, who are showing us time and time again, all over the world, that there are real meanies.

I hope this show gets cancelled or at least answers for their doucheyness. I'll stick to Tyra and her fierceness next time. She empowers young women of all shapes, sizes, colours, creeds and religions. Remember when she told everyone to kiss her fat ass. That was fun. ANTM has made me cry on several occasions through the years because of the heartfelt stories. Canada's Next Top Model just makes my blood boil, just like that old hag Jeanne Becker.

AGREED.
gosh, you literally read my mind.

now, there are 3 bullies left on the show, who do NOT deserve to win. Now, I'm completely careless as to who wins. I, myself am Canada, and I truly think this show makes Canadians look like biaatches. Maryam didn't even deserve to be eliminated.

AGREED!

You are disgusting. Calling someone you dont know "a souless human-being" is really low.

1.)It's a reality show, meaning you see about an hours worth of footage from each girl;MEANING you dont know them at all

2.)You are being overly sensitive. I hear people saying"thats retarded" all the time. It has become a slang word and you will never stop people from using it.

and calling the bullies horrible names is the same as what they did to maryam, probably worse. Its just another double standard.

"Top Model isn't just about beauty, but about grace, poise, goodness and being someone a young woman like me can admire"--------UM this isnt a beauty queen pageant, models are there to sell clothes and take amazing pictures.Clients dont care about personality.

I agree that calling someone "soulless" is rather cruel. But I've felt the undercurrent of racism and general discrimination in Canada. Not that I am discriminated against myself, but I know it's there. That's why there's all this "politically correct" stuff being thrown around. But "political correctness" does not eliminate the underlying discrimination. I have come to believe that we will never eliminate discrimination completely; that, sadly, it is part of human nature. It is something that shouldn't be, and some people do not discriminate at all, but the majority of the world still seems to have this "us versus them" mentality. I would love to eradicate it, but I don't know if that will ever happen. Discrimination makes me so sad. When I see it, I wonder if there is any hope at all for the world.

Look at us. Look at what they make you give.

Can you say hypocrite? Calling someone "disgusting" for their opinion now that's low. What you fail to realize is that no one here is upset that Maryam lost the competition, but we do have the right to voice our opinion about negative and unacceptable behaviour on a TV show on a public forum. Especially a TV show that many young girls watch.

1) Yes it is a reality show, but people with a conscience will not be collaborators to cruelty, bullying or racism. Unfortunately, many people do stand by silently while others are bullied, hence higher numbers of suicides, drop out rates in schools and violence both at schools and the workplace.

2) Decent human beings do not use the "r" word nor is it slang. Would you use it around someone with special needs? Say to a person whose child had Down Syndrome? Say it around your boss, teacher, parents or someone your respect? If not, then its NOT a slang word.

No one is calling these girls "horrible" names we are simply condoning their behaviour. We as Canadians have the right to do so. By the way, it isn’t just a modeling competition, it’s CANADA’S Next Top Model and the winner is someone who is representing our country. So we do have the right to voice our concern.

Um i think i know about bullying; i was bullied all throughout junior high. What linsay did was wrong, but it was far from bullying. She was just being a bitch.

And why the hell would i say retard to a child with down syndrome? I said its a slang word that some people use, just like a curse word.

You say these girls are 'disgusting' but the fact that you're calling them immature names is also 'disgusting'.

First off, Nikita IS ignorant. She used the word 'retarded' and apologized for it. But she meant to say that - or why did he correct herself by using the word 'disabled'? She clearly meant to say 'retarded' which is socially incorrect, and just plain rude and offensive.

Secondly, Brani is ignorant as well. She believes that Canada's Next Top Model should be Canadian - even though this country is proud of the fact that it is a multicultural nation. Just because Sisi wasn't born in Canada, doesn't mean she can't represent Canada.
