terrible. brings nothing to the world

after the first 10 mins we'd have given this 1/10 but we ploughed on. After watching the whole thing I'd give it a 3/10 tops. I am surprised this got some good reviews. Nothing really happens. The acting is pretty poor. I was hoping this would improve on ma mare (garrel) and the beat my heart skipped (duris). But it was unfortunately one of the many sub par films that France churns out. If you have already seen this do not despair there are 1000's better. If you haven't don't think twice watch something else

I hated this film. Even the naked broads couldn't save it.

I'll have to agree with you. I am a huge Duris fan and I've seen most of his movies. I thought the role that he played in this film was a bit different from his usual roles and he did a great job, but the film as a whole didn't do anything for me either. I was disappointed.

reply

I agree. I though it was awful. It was just all over the place and I never got involved.

Wow. Civilization is spiraling down. It's Frannie & Zooey, you semi-literate boobs! Should Christophe Honoré have added a car chase in order to keep the attention of those incapable of responding to internal conflict?

reply

I agree with you on the "nothing really happens" part, although it's more like "only a few things happen", but either way this is so obviously not a plot-driven film that it's highly irrelevant.
This is an extremely character-driven film, very slow, and rather weird if you will. There are some scenes I honestly didn't get, and couldn't really relate to/understand the characters during the break up phase of the film, but the part that's takes place in Paris I liked a lot, precisely because I started to connect with the characters more and more as it progressed.
It didn't blow me away, but I it has some very interesting points. Definitely an improvement from Ma Mere. Nice acting, a couple of very moving scenes (if you manage to give a sh*t about the character's lives and feelings, that is), and at least it's far from formulaic, which is something I appreciate a lot.

chosentwo: You said exactly what I was thinking when I read the original post. This is a character-driven film, meaning the interest in the film does not come from watching a series of events with a beginning, middle, and end unfold, but rather watching a group of characters change and develop. I find character-driven films like this one, to be very fascinating. I assume they are incredibly hard to write.

OBAMA / Biden 2OO8

I agree. However, I doubt if this one was as difficult to write as a thematically similar, but completely origin, script would have been, because, as I mentioned previously, this film is an adaptation of Frannie & Zooey.

tediousness dressed up as arthouse.
Charatcer development? What character development? There's no arc to the story.

My thoughts exactly. If I had seen this thread and been influenced by the OP and those that agree with him or her, I would have denied myself a wonderful film experience. Garrel and Duris were excellent and I loved their on screen rapport. The entire cast was superb. Duris, in fact, could have taken his role way over-the-top but thankfully didn't and instead gave us a gem of a performance.

Special mention to Guy Marchand, who was wonderfully sweet and sympathetic--in a gruff way--in this.

Christophe Honoré's direction was always interesting. I particularly liked the non-linear handling of Paul and Anna's relationship and its beginning and end. Plus the way Paris looks in winter is bleakly gorgeous. I found it was affecting my mood and pulling me further into this film. I would watch Dans Paris again just for those city scenes.

I absolutely loved this film.

I agree. I didn't love the film, but those scenes of Paris at night (especially the one of the cafe on the corner) in the opening credits were so gorgeous they hooked me. I watched to see the city. Paris in winter is an incredible sight. It's gray and more gray from ground to sky. That intrigues me.
