Grrr 5.8 ? Not fair ! What's wrong with IMDB ???

Hrmlmlmlmmmm...
This movie deserves a much higher grade.
Of course, if the spectators can't stand dialogues which sound a tad literary... Well, at least refined... I wouldn t say this is intellectual chattering : they merely talk about love, frustration, despair and joy. The movie's about interactions between people. There are many moving scenes. In fact, I understood the characters so well that I can't believe I see so many grumpy spectators...

I feel sad if so many people just narrow their mind when it's time to be faced with something elaborate ; in France, they just say it's "intello" and think they can get away with it.

Whereas it's not ! It's just funny and realistic and well done !

I know. I loved this movie too. Loved it in all its plotless J.D Salingeresque glory. Loved the characters, the acting, the not so subtle Salinger references (Franny and Zooey, anyone), I loved it all. I loved the brooding of the older brother and the joy of the younger brother. 5.8 is a joke. But hey we are talking about a rating system that places The Return of the King as the fourth or fifth greatest movie of all time, right up there with Shawshank Redemption. Have you seen the director's previous movie Ma Mere? I'm thinking of checking it out.

The movies sounds promising. I'm surprised that the rating is rather low too, though I haven't seen it myself. I know the two main actors from The Spanish Appartment and The Dreamers. What does 'intello' mean?

reply

"intello" means intellectual - with a snubbish tone.

"Ma mère" is *very* different from "Dans Paris". The latter is a sort of "nouvelle vague" movie: like Garrel's character it breaks the rules, is at times annoying but oh-so charming. "Ma mère", otoh, is an adaptation of George Bataille's best known book and, as all of Bataille's work, is about sex, death, aesthetics and morals. The book is a shocking work of genius; the movie failed in rendering it.

As for the actors - Duris is very popular in France but has overplayed his "cool *beep* character. Paul in this movie might be his first drastically different piece (although he is fantastic in "de battre mon coeur s'est arrêté"). Garrel is a younger and fantastically promising one - I recommend "les amants réguliers", directed by his father (and not "the dreamers", a sterilized rendition of the sixties by bitter not-so-talented aging director).

I love both Duris, who's a true chameleon (watch the adorable "L'auberge espagnole", the excellent "De battre mon coeur s'est arrêté" and the incredible - though NOT for everyone - "Exils" back-to-back and you'll see what I'm talking about...the characters have absolutely NOTHING to do with one another and yet he's PERFECT as all 3 of them), and Garrel, who's already a very, well, mature actor I'd say, despite being so young (he's 23, right?). He's confident and completely captivating - and I'm not even considering here the fact that he's unbelievably good-looking and charming and plain sexy (I'm only 24, I can say that without being gross, right? LOL). And while I do like "The dreamers" a lot, I agree that "Les amants réguliers" is far superior. I'll get to watch "Dans Paris" soon, but I really wish I could watch Garrel's other movies somehow...

Oh, what did you mean when you said Duris has "overplayed his cool *beep* character"? You mean he's not so well in "Dans Paris" or are you saying in general? 'Cos if you're saying in general, wow...I know I'm not in France or anything, but we get pretty much all of his movies here in Brazil and I don't see that at all!

reply

Definetely, this movie deserves a higher rating.

6.5, at least. Good movie, yes sir. It some kind of homage to the 60's Nouvelle Vague.

You have a lot of losers who are into action and comic (Batman, Spiderman etc) here, so of course, they will never ever give this film a good score. It's coming out in the UK this weekend, so hopefully this board will get busy and the score will go up.

After seeing the film, I can see how either you love it or you absolutely hate it....so maybe 5.8 isn't off the mark actually, which is like inbetween.

I liked it, although I can see why people would think it is 'pretentious'....

reply

Definitely not pretentious. It was a terrible movie. Not even as good as Ma Mere, Christophe Honore's previous effort. It was like he wanted to be Truffaut and failed miserably. The best plotless french film is perhaps La Double Vie de Veronique. Dans Paris is perhaps the worst.

i really liked it. on the australian dvd there's an intervew with the director in the extra features and it made me like the movie even more. i love french new wave movies, especially truffaut, and i didn't even realise there was a connection until i watched that interview and came on here. i didn't even notice the mum was collette from the antoine doinel series!!

reply

How can you say that the film is plotless? Not all plots are external. This internal plot revolved around the attempts of one brother, himself not exactly a paragon of emotional health, who was desperate to re-engage his sibling, who is in a malaise of existential angst, from the same sadness that resulted in the death of yet another sibling.

I Agree with you. Not IMDb's fault, but it is USA based. A wide chasm exists between Hollywood style and cine-indie. Most American viewers/reviewers do not specialize in foreign classic-art cine simply because it's...foreign. I grew up overseas (lucky!) and prefer indie-style for depth; blockbusters are ok for the occasional Wow.

This movie is one of countless avec la meme probleme, the same frustration. It's not about the movie. IMDb score is undervalued due to its global outreach, while situated in USA. Scoring bias is inherent. IMDb is a great directory; your concern is about quality of the film. IMDb has links to reviews- how a particular film was received and reviewed by its countrymen.

Bon Voyage!

reply

Not that it makes a difference, but I'm an American and I gave the film an 8/10.
