Sure it's over the top and whatnot, but I found it to be genuinely cinematic.

I hope I'm not alone in this.

You are not alone. I myself watched this film several times and liked it a lot, although it was a flop in box office here in China.

You are not.My favouraite from the last decade.The script is genius.The flim is profoundly symbolic.
