Better variations on the same idea.

I haven't seen this film, so I'm not criticizing it, but given the reviews I've read of it, I'm wondering what other films would be recommended as good "youthful person discovering himself/herself" types of stories?

Go to Criterion and ask them to work on Satyajit Ray films, a good Kwaidan rerelease.

Probably the best is The Gradaute with Dustin Hoffman. Other coming of age discovery films include Summer of 42, Harold and Maude (granted its quirky but Harold does discover himself) American Graffiti and recently Adventureland. Hope that helps.

A MUCH better film with similar themes is A HOME AT THE END OF THE WORD (2004):

I have an idea for sequel... even bigger jaws -_-

I would add Risky Business to the list. Both open with a dream sequence, and there are quite a few other similarities.

"Say anything" with John Cusack and the excellent "Breaking away" with Dennis Christopher
