A challenge to any willing Pittsburghers

Give me five good reasons to stay here. To be fair, I have five exclusions.

Five exclusions:
- Sports teams - I really don't give two s**ts about the Steelers, the Pirates, or the Penguins.
- "The skyline" - I don't know why people tout this so much. It's only visible from the highways and what can it do for you anyway? You can't take it with you. You can only really take a picture of it, and even then you don't have to stay here to enjoy it. Why do people even bring it up?
- The bar scene - I know alcohol is the main source of recreation in this city, but it's not my thing.
- The universities - I graduated from Pitt and my degree has done nothing for me IN THIS VERY CITY. Yes, this is a sore point.
- The job market - I live here, and I'm looking for a better job. You can't bluff me on this one. There's nothing here.

We both know mentioning the weather or the public transportation system aren't reasons, so don't even bother with those, either.

Okay... convince me this city is worth staying in.

im from pittsburgh, i love it, and i dont care if you do or not. hell, i hope you move to a place that makes you happy. i dont need to defend my city. i dont understand why people come on here and bash it or fight tooth and nail for it. its not for everyone. reasons why i love it you say we cant use. i think its a beautiful city and the view from Mt. Washington is my favorite view of any city ive been to. i love having a good time with my friends, and the southside is great for that. going to two beautiful new stadiums is a real joy for me, and i love, love the penguins. i cant wait to see the new arena.

i love some of the greasy joints to eat there, pirmantis and vocellis and toms diner. theres a lot of outdoor destiniations an hour or two away from pittsburgh.

most of all though, its my home, its where im from. i have family and friends there that will always keep me coming back if i dont live there.

if you dont like it, thats fine, i hope you find somewhere that suits you. im just glad i already have that in a city.

Why don't you just kill yourself?

You are not stuck anywhere. Have you ever tried applying for a job outside the state? It is funny because I know numerous people who have reached various degrees of success after graduating from PITT.

Did you ever stop to think URZA that maybe you are just a bitter cantankerous bitty who finds it easier to complain then to get off of their obviously lazy rear end find a job. Or maybe you stupidly got a degree in philosophy. Not all degrees are equal.

You are a stupid person. The exclusions you list are pretty much the reasons why anyone would want to live anywhere. The scenery? no. The social scene? no. Sports and entertainment? no. Education? no. And just to clarify things, you are not the only person having difficulty finding work in the United States. The country is in a recession. It is especially difficult to find work if you got a degree in computer science, investments, and accounting.

I think I know what the real problem is: you are an unattractive, possibly overweight embittered man who finds it easier to blame everyone else on their problems then themselves.

God please protect me from your followers

Politics brings out the idiot in everyone.

did u ever stop to think that maybe your life just sucks and you'll be negative about it no matter where u live? why don't u try moving out of pittsburgh if u hate it so much and stop your whining?

Pittsburgh is great because of three words: COST OF LIVING

I have lived in Maryland, Utah, Washington, and Hawaii, and none of them come close to Pittsburgh when it comes to cost of living. $40K a year is enough for a whole family, where in Hawaii you would be homeless. The money you save living in the 'burgh, you can fly to Honolulu once a month and still own a nice home.

reply

I can't, GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN!!!!! This city is like freaking quick sand. Cost of living my ass, I lived better back in TX with less income. The city is F#%king jabrone!!!

reply

djakira you are clearly the most evil and bitter man in the history of the universe. You're also a dumbass.

reply

Why,because I hate tha "Burgh"? Wow you must be very intuitive to be able to size me up from just that. Aren't you just the poor man's Deepak Chopra.

If I'm a dumbass, it's the last 8 years of being subjected to the idiocy of this horsesh%t town.

Examples:

1) For being the 59th largest city in the U.S., it has a level of internal corruption that rivals NYC. Too many hands in the cookie jar there methinks... Unless you're one of those mindless morons that think "Onorato is our man!!". Or maybe you like that prick Ravenstahl, now here's a man who became mayor because the last one died, then he got re-elected as mayor because no one else wanted the job. Oh but let me not forget that king of all crooks Tom Murphy.

2) Two words: PROPERTY ASSESSMENTS!!!!! If you own a home in a halfway decent middle class community, you're screwed. My buddy paid 60k for his home, 3 years later he's paying property taxes as though his home were 95k thanks to the assessments. Does that sound right to you? What home goes up 35k in value in the middle of a real estate crisis?

3) Port Authority, practically broke because they insist on keeping 3 times the amount of high-level(60k+ salaried)staff on than is necessary. An easy fix, but these jackasses decided instead, to remedy it by hiking fares and cutting routes. Don't forget the millions in uncounted change they conveniently forgot about until recently.

4) PNC Park/Heinz Field: Instead of spending the 100 or so million needed to repair Three Rivers Stadium, this city spends over 497 million they don't have to build 2 new sports venues they don't need. Tell me, why does a city this small with an economy this screwed up need 2 new ball parks? Guess who paying for it? You, Me, and every other hard working jabrone unfortunate enough to live here.

5) Cost of parking: second only to New York City, nuff said...

6) Pittsburgh has been the 10th Fastest shrinking city since 2005. Where is everyone going? Not far, mostly to surrounding counties because people are fed up with Allegheny County, but too broke to go very far. On another note, Monessen has experience a population rise since 2005, and that place is steaming sh#thole. People are leaving Pgh for Monessen, what does that say about Pgh?

7) The Majestic Star Casino/New Penguins arena debacle. How does one improve an impoverished area like the Hill district? Well, you bring in some shady characters from out of town to build a casino no one can pay for and tell them to promise to help pay to build a new arena you neither need or can afford. If the concerned citizens of said impoverished community have any issues, they can f@ck themselves.

If I'm "the most evil and bitter man in the history of the universe." as you so eloquently put it, then so be it. But keep in mind, there is a method to my madness. Now maybe I wasn't so forthright in my previous post, but I do like the people of Pittsburgh, even the moronic yet good-natured "yinzers". Hell I even think Pittsburgh has some of the tamest crackheads of any city I've ever lived in which is saying a lot. But the city itself is BS, and it angers me that the people of this city are too preoccupied with the "Stillers" and "Pens" to give a crap that this city is being exploited by the powers that be.

I think most of the people who have these kinds of problems with Pittsburgh just have no basis for comparison, because they've never spent any time anywhere else.

Think parking is expensive in Pittsburgh? It's twice as expensive in Philly, three times as expensive in Boston, and five times as expensive in NYC. I live in New Jersey now, and I pay more to park at a train station 20 miles from NYC (just in order to board a train that costs me another $20 a day to get into the city) than I'd pay to park right in the middle of downtown Pittsburgh.

Think Pittsburgh is the only place in which government corruption or mismanagement takes place? Try living in Jersey! Municipal officials here are INDICTED here about once a month.

Think Pittsburgh is the only place footing the bill for sports stadiums with tax dollars? Pretty much every city with a pro sports team does. What's worse is that many (including those in Pittsburgh) are financed in part with state funds... which means that people living in Scranton, York, Erie, and Williamsport helped pay for PNC Park and Heinz Field - and they can't even attend games there! Or how about Kansas City, a place that spent $300M to build a hockey/basketball arena WITHOUT ACTUALLY HAVING A HOCKEY OR BASKETBALL TEAM.

You don't have to be a "dumbass" to make these kinds of statements, but claiming that these kinds of things are unique to Pittsburgh does make you seem really ignorant of the way the world works.

reply

THANK YOU! That was almost word for word what I wanted to say.

Why live in Pittsburgh? It's cheap, close to lots of major cities, plenty of entertainment options, good people (for the most part), and close to the outdoors. I know that last one sounds weird, but not many people in major cities can drive 20-30 minutes and be completely cut off from the rest of the world if they want.

And seriously, anyone who brings up the politicians in Pittsburgh are complete morons. Go move to DC, Baltimore, Boston, NYC, Jersey, Detroit, LA, Dallas, KC, Miami, etc, and tell me the politicians are better. Yeah, Pitt has its political issues...but what city doesn't?

You folks bashing the city are probably either complete rejects or think you're better than everyone else. Pittsburgh is awesome.

reply

i'm not originally from pittsburgh and i'm not a big fan, but you don't have to stay here.

no one cares if you don't like the steelers, pirates, or pens. really. it's better if you'd just suck it up and deal with everyone liking their hometown team. god forbid, people have loyalty for their city's sports team. trust me, i know plenty of people who "bleed black and gold" no matter how badly the pirates, pens, or steelers suck, the city stays loyal to it's teams and you can't change them being excited, so don't complain about not caring about them, no one else gives a sh!t if you care or not
