The pictures shown in wikipedia may make Ipoh look more developed and advanced than what shown in the movie. But, there are a lot of small towns in Ipoh that still look like the places shown in the movie.
The bus station in the movie where the kid met up with his mom is located in Medan Kidd (a place in Ipoh).
Found another site. I think this might look more like the Ipoh in the movie.

It being a Hong Kong film, but the locations doesn't look like Hong Kong. So I was a bit confused.... hehe.
